Wendi Peters, 53, has addressed her time in the ITV soap Coronation Street as the actress admitted she’s “lucky” her character was not killed off. It comes as the soap star is set to return to the theatre, in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.

Coronation Street fans have waved goodbye to many fan-favourites including Cilla Brown, who made her show debut in 2003.

The actress announced her departure from the series back in 2007 but later returned for a short stint seven years later.

Wendi explained that she doesn’t have any immediate plans to return to the soap but is thankful her character was not killed off.

“I was lucky. When I went up to the office and said I want to move on thank you very much,” she explained, “They could have quite easily said, ‘Right let’s have a kill you off explosive storyline.’

“I was lucky they didn’t do that. [Cilla] went away to Las Vegas.”

Cilla was introduced to the soap as the love interest of Les Battersby (played by Bruce Jones), following the breakdown of his marriage.

She was involved in some of the most dramatic storylines and was disliked by her neighbours in the soap.

Even after being diagnosed with skin cancer, she used her illness to get revenge on Les after he cheated on her.

Cilla soon left Weatherfield for a new life in the US, but is often mentioned on the soap from time to time.

Addressing a Corrie return, Wendi commented: “There is that chance I suppose. I always say never say never.

“I have no immediate intention of going back but who knows in a few years time.”

She added: “Who knows what I’ll be doing, a storyline might come in. I’m lucky they didn’t kill her off because then you can’t.”

Meanwhile, Wendi has swapped soaps for the stage as she gears up for a heart-pounding new adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, alongside fellow actor Bill Ward.

Washington Irving’s classic novel, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, has been transformed into a nail-biting experience, taking the American Dream into the American Gothic, bringing the Headless Horseman to life on stage.

The horror play promises to unleash terror for audiences as they tour the UK this autumn.

Speaking about the project, Wendi revealed that audiences are in for a treat.

“I hope they’ll be scared,” she remarked. “They’re going to be excited by the play. It’s a fine line between comedy and horror, so we have to get the horror correct with the illusions.”

Wendi continued: “People need to be scared. People will be a little bit uncomfortable in their seats but it’s a brilliant time.

“As much as we think people need to laugh and be entertained, they also need something new.”

The UK tour of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow runs from September 30 until December 4.
