Eric Carle has died aged 91. His cause of death is currently unknown. A statement from his team on his Twitter page reads: “It is with heavy hearts that we share that Eric Carle, author & illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other beloved classics, passed away on 23rd at the age of 91.

“Thank you for sharing your talent with generations of young readers.”

The author released The Very Hungry Caterpillar in 1969, which went on to sell over 50 million copies. 

Tributes have flooded in for the late author on social media.

One commented: “Heartbreaking. Rest in peace, Eric Carle.”

A second added: “RIP to the great and wonderful artist and human being Eric Carle, who has enriched so many children’s lives.”

A third wrote: “Eric Carle was a beautiful genius, and I’ll love his work forever. RIP and thank you.”
