Kate Ferdinand says Christmas is ‘more special’ since meeting Rio and kids

Since becoming a mum to Cree and step mum to husband Rio’s three children, former TOWIE star Kate Ferdinand says that Christmases are all the more exciting.

The 30-year-old, who married football pundit Rio, 43, in 2019, tells OK! her favourite festive memories revolve around the kids these days. “Since I’ve met Rio and the children, I’ve just loved Christmas as it’s so fun,” she explains. “Just all being together and seeing the kids’ faces full of excitement.”

This year, Kate will be spending the big day at home with her husband, their one-year-old son Cree and Rio’s children, Lorenz, 15, Tate, 13, and Tia, 10. And since the couple welcomed their first child together just before Christmas last year, Kate is looking forward to being able to get more into the festive spirit this time around.

Here, Kate opens up about family plans, time-saving Christmas hacks and her New Year’s resolutions…

Hi Kate. Are you excited for Christmas?

I love Christmas, I start feeling festive around the last week of November, so I’m really excited. It’s only once a year, so it’s nice to make it go on for as long as possible.

Are the children looking forward to Christmas as well?

Yeah. It’s really lovely having children around at Christmas time as they get really excited about it all.

Where will you be celebrating this year?

We’ll be at home, probably relaxing in our pyjamas! We may have some parents over. To be honest, we haven’t sorted it but people will probably pop in and out – if Boris [Johnson] allows us to! It’s hard to make plans, we’re going to play it by ear.

You gave birth to Cree shortly before Christmas last year. Will this year be a bit more relaxed?

Last year I was in a bit of pain and I wasn’t fully mobile. So this year, I can be up singing my Christmas songs. Cree is walking now, so I’m sure he’ll be terrorising us and trying to get all the presents open, so I’ll be on the move a bit this year.

Will you dress him up?

I still try to dress the big kids up, but they’re not happy about it because they’re teenagers! They think, “Gosh, do we have to put on these pyjamas.” But I think it’s nice. It’s the memories, isn’t it? So yeah, it’s nice to all wear our matching pyjamas. I love it and Tia loves it – I’m not sure the others do!

It was Cree’s first birthday recently, did you do anything special?

We had a little party with some of his friends, which was lovely.

What milestones has Cree hit recently?

He’s started walking, so that’s a really big thing.

What is your favourite part of the festive season?

Just spending some quality family time together. It’s nice. We’ve all got really busy schedules, including the children, so it’s nice to just be here, relax and spend quality time together.

What’s your favourite memory of Christmasses gone by?

That’s a hard one! Christmas with kids is just so special, as they get really excited and it just makes it so magical. So since I’ve met Rio and the children, I’ve just loved Christmas as it’s so fun. Just all being together and seeing the kids’ faces full of excitement.

Have you got all of your shopping done?

I’m nearly there! Most of the stuff I get online but I do like to pop out for little bits.

You’ve teamed up with Aptamil for its HackVent campaign, what’s it all about?

It’s really for busy parents who are on the go and small little hacks to make your life easier so that you can spend as much quality time around your family as possible. I’m all for making my life easier.

What sort of hacks are there?

Things like peeling potatoes – I dread peeling them. It’s one of the worst things about doing a roast every Sunday. So it’s about getting ahead – when the baby is napping you can just peel the potatoes and leave them overnight so you haven’t got as much to do the next day. Just little things like that to save time over Christmas so you can spend more time with your family.

What other hacks do you love?

It’s hard to describe, but it’s called prep and go. It’s the way you fold baby clothes – you put the trousers, top and socks together and the socks wrap around, so it wraps it into a mini burrito shape and makes so much more room in your baby bag when you’re going out. I always overpack as I’m scared I’ll forget something. I always like to make sure I have enough food and clothes just in case. So that tip is really simple and makes more room at home.

You could put outfits together at home in drawers too?

Yes you could put full outfits together and roll them up, and they’re easy to grab. I actually hang Cree’s clothes up, so when I’m in a rush, I have it all ready. Getting four children out of the house can be stressful, so I like to try to be prepared as much as possible.

What are your top tips for minimising stress over the holiday period?

It’s hard, but I try to be organised and have things planned. When you leave things to the last minute, it can become stressful when you’re running around like crazy. I try to be as prepared as I can with things like peeling the veg so I can enjoy the moment more on the day.

How do you look back on 2021?

I’ve had a really lovely year. I feel like I’ve grown a lot as a person, I’ve learnt a lot about myself. I’ve had Cree and we’ve all bonded as a family, so it’s been a really lovely year for us.

What are your hopes for 2022?

To be happy! I always say my New Year’s resolution is to try and be more present. I feel like, as a generation, we spend a lot of time on our phones. I’m hoping to be able to help a lot of people with some new project I’m working on, and just be happy!
