Kate Garraways husband Derek Draper pushed in wheelchair by carer for shop visit

Kate Garraway’s husband, Derek Draper, was pictured on the way to the shops with his carer in a rare public appearance since first catching Covid-19 back in 2020.

At the height of the pandemic, author and former political lobbyist Derek caught the virus and has been battling the repercussions ever since.

The family was forced to miss a trip because of Derek’s health, with Good Morning Britain host Kate, 55, also speaking candidly about the financial impact of is care and providing for her family.

Derek, 55, was pictured out and about in a rare appearance this week as he was pushed in a wheelchair by his carer on the way to the shops.

He sported comfy jogging bottoms as he braced for the elements in a waterproof coat and leather gloves.

Kate, who is set to embark on a worldwide journey in the hopes of finding new treatments for Derek, has been incredibly candid about the experience and the effect it has had on herself and the rest of the family.

Derek and Kate have two kids together, William, 13, and Darcey, 17.

Kate also experienced a dramatic weight loss following Derek’s hospitalisation, with the TV personality later deciding to quit smoking in a move that was applauded by fans and followers.

Speaking exclusively to OK!, a source explained: "Kate has made the decision to give up smoking – the reason being that she needs to be healthy for her children.

"Derek’s health has remained in this declining state for a while now and has faced a lot of set-backs in recent weeks and it’s given her a wake up call that she needs to be fit and well for her kids.

"She wants to focus on looking after herself as well as Derek this year."

Our source added: "The stress of caring for him has caused her to gradually lose a lot of weight and she knows that smoking isn’t the right means of helping her to cope, so she’s making her own health the priority as she hates the thought of becoming ill herself and her children having to cope with two parents that are unwell."

Just last month, Kate posted a throwback picture from 2021 that showed her husband bed-bound as he was looked after by a carer called Jake.

In the caption, Kate explained: “Many of you will remember Jake who cared for Derek when he first came out of hospital in April 21 – from the documentary #caringforderek, so you will know what a wonderful healthcare professional he is.

“The world of carers never fails to surprise me with their depths of talent, thoughtfulness and motivation," she added after noting Jake's break into the music industry.
