Les Dennis, 68, has opened up exclusively to Express.co.uk about how excited he is to be back acting with Sherrie Hewson. The pair first worked together on Madhouse back in 1980 and have been close pals ever since.

Now the pair will be treading the boards in a musical tour of Fat Friends.

Speaking about their collaboration, Les admitted it was an “anniversary” for them.

He said: “It’s the first time I’ve worked with Sherrie Hewson in ages.

“We started on the Madhouse, Russ Abbot’s Madhouse 40 years ago this coming January.

“So it’s a bit of an anniversary for us to be working together again.”

Les admitted that while the pair have known each other all this time, they haven’t seen each other a great deal.

Therefore, it’s been a real thrill to both be back in the rehearsal studio.

He continued: “Sherrie and I go back all those years.

“We haven’t seen each other for ages, but we keep in touch on the phone.

“I last saw her I think a couple of years ago when I was doing panto in Manchester and then she came to the theatre with Benidorm.

“So I went to see that and we went to dinner with all the cast after.

“It’s great to actually be working with her again, although we don’t have a lot to do in the show together.

“But just being in the rehearsal room with her and we pop out to the local deli for lunch together, it’s very nice.”

Fat Friends: The Musical will be going on tour from January around the country.

The show is based on Kay Mellor’s beloved series, which aired on ITV from 2000 until 2005.

This version stars Les and Sherrie alongside Hollyoaks’ Jessica Ellis and Lee Mead.

Speaking about getting involved in the show, Les admitted it was down to the director.

“I always wanted to work with Kay,” he added.

“We’ve talked about it and kept meeting each other at functions and talking about it.

“And then when she asked me I thought, ‘Well, yeah, let’s do this!’”

Les also explained he was a big fan of the television show, which starred Ruth Jones, James Corden, Sheridan Smith and Alison Steadman.

He continued: “I loved the TV show when it was out and this is a really good musical version of that.”

He’ll be taking on the role of Fergus, who is a Fish and Chip shop owner who’s none too pleased about the dieting craze which has struck his town.
