EastEnders star Michael Greco has revealed that his baby son is still in the intensive care unit following complications after his premature arrival.

The 51 year old became a father for the first time on July 1 when he announced that his partner Helen Harris had given birth six weeks early.

Doctors delivered Gianluca early after a scan detected he had the rare birth defect Gastroschisis, in which internal organs including intestines develop outside the baby's body.

And over a week later, the soap star has offered an update of the newborn's health, explaining that he was "fighting to live a normal life".

Sharing a smiling picture of Gianluca, Michael wrote: "My beautiful boy is still in ICU and fighting to live a normal life.

"He has become stronger and stronger, day by day, and has given himself an incredible chance of a normal life that every newborn baby deserves."

Michael concluded: "He's a true Greco and has made my heart completely full and bursting with love. Much, much more than I ever thought was possible. Daddy is still a "tad" emotional. I love you Gianluca.."

While making the announcement of his new bundle of joy earlier this month, Michael revealed that Gianluca was born weighing 4.47lbs.

He wrote: "The little man was born prematurely due to the fact that previous scans had failed to pick up his rare birth defect called Gastroschisis.

"The consultant suggested it was best for him to born early so that he could get the necessary care and attention. He was born at University College of London Hospital @uclh Their staff were extremely professional and Mother and Baby could not have been in better hands. Dad was a "tad" emotional to say the least!

"Baby has already had his first operation to replace his bowel where it should belong and is under the worlds best care of @greatormondst where he will be in ICU for a while and most probably for up to 6 weeks.

"My heart is full already and this is by far the best day of my life. I love you Gianluca more than I can ever imagine."
