Naya Rivera’s former Glee cast mate Matthew Morrison has paid tribute to the late star following her death earlier this year.

The 41 year old actor starred alongside Naya, who was 33 when she died from drowning in a lake in California.

Naya saved her last bit of energy to save her five year old son Josey, who is being looked after by Naya’s ex husband Ryan Dorsey and Naya’s sister Nickayla.

And now, after Ryan and Nickayla received criticism after the pair decided to move in together to raise Josey, Glee star Matthew shared his sadness at Josey’s situation.

He said: “It's crazy saying ‘was.’ But she was a special person and my heart just goes out to that family who is grieving.

“I can't imagine, you know, having a son myself, the upbringing that that child is going to be exposed to because his mother is not there, you know?

“It's gotta be so tough, so my heart goes out to that family.”

Matthew also paid tribute to the star and looked back at their time together on Glee.

He told Entertainment Tonight: “Naya was a huge bright light. I mean, she's someone who kind of kept us in stitches on set, like, she was always the one who is just so witty and just, like, always joking.”

The actor also revealed Naya would keep everyone entertained during their gruelling work schedules.

Matthew said: “On that show, it was difficult. We pulled long, long hours — like 16 to 18 hour days — and we needed that, that team morale, and she was always there to give us a good laugh.”

Naya’s former husband recently emotionally hit out at those who criticised his decision to invite Naya’s sister to live with him and son.

In a clip in a video posted on his Instagram page he said: “It was brought to my attention that there is a lot of people who have a lot to say and have opinions on a family’s tragic situation – 99% are strangers that don’t even know this family.

“I’ll be honest I probably read about ten that was enough to know that is why I don’t read comments. There’s people making judgements and assumptions, they’re sending terrible messages, wishing death upon strangers that they truly know next to zero about.”

Ryan then explained how his son asked for Naya’s sister Nickayla to live with them after burying the Glee star.

He said: “And then he asks me if T [Nickayla] can live with us. I went: ‘TT can live with us forever’ because now she’s the closest thing that he has to a mum because you’re gonna need all the help you can get as a single parent trying to build your career and navigate this disaster with your child and you deal with it every hour of every day for 80 plus days now.

“I wouldn’t want any of you to ever have to go through that and to have to let him get what he wants, what he asks for.

“And what he needs right now, which is his family. Even though you know it’s temporary and it’s not forever, it’s a temporary situation and after all he’s had to go through how can you deny him that?”
