Lily Collins, actress and British-American daughter of musician Phil Collins included an open letter to her father in her book of personal essays, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me. The star of the Netflix series, Emily In Paris, spoke candidly about their relationship during her childhood.

The 32-year-old released her memoir in 2017, where the on-screen star opened up about her struggles.

Her parents, the Genesis drummer and American Jill Tavelman divorced in 1994.

Emily also addressed her father’s split from his third wife Orianne Cevey in 2008.

The Golden-Globe nominated actress said at the time she found it difficult to handle the “pain” and “confusion”.

“I forgive you for not always being there when I needed and for not being the dad I expected,” Emily said, according to the Daily Mail.

“I forgive the mistakes you made. And although it may seem like it’s too late, it’s not. There’s still so much time to move forward.”

The TV star also addressed her relationship with her dad and the legendary musician.

“I couldn’t handle the pain and confusion surrounding my dad’s divorce, and I was having a hard time balancing being a teenager with pursuing two different grown-up careers,” she wrote.

She added: “Many of my deepest insecurities stem from these issues with my dad.”

Emily finished off the letter with a message of forgiveness and shared that she has learned to accept how things happened.

“We all make choices and, although I don’t excuse some of yours, at the end of the day we can’t rewrite the past,” she commented.

“I’m learning how to accept your actions and vocalise how they made me feel.”

She added: “I accept and honor the sadness and anger I felt toward the things you did or didn’t do, did or didn’t give me.”

The Netflix star has recently penned a tribute to her dad to mark his 70th birthday earlier this year.

Turning the clock back herself, Lily shared a sweet photo of the pair of them when she was very little.

She added a message saying they have a lot more fun to come.

She wrote: “Happy 70th birthday dad!! Words aren’t enough to express how much love and pride I have for you.

“After 7 decades on this planet, countless trips around the world, 5 kids, endless memories and a lifetime of stories… you’re not done yet!

“You mean so much to me and I can’t wait for all the adventures and years to come. I love you so much, to the moon and back again.”

Phil celebrated his birthday with a family Zoom call.
