Strictly Come Dancing contestants HRVY, 22, and Maisie Smith, 19, were at the centre of romance speculation after growing close on the show during the 2020 series. But, the 22-year-old singer has now set the record straight and said “nothing happened” between them.

“It was funny to watch everyone talk about it,” he revealed.

“Sometimes we were like, ‘Shall we play up to it?’ We are really good friends and still speak.”

He went on to praise the EastEnders actress for doing “great” on the show despite pressure from the public.

“A lot of the public weren’t too kind to her at the beginning, but it was cool to see her be strong.

“People changed their view on her,” he added to The Sun.

The singer previously admitted the pair were told off by bosses for getting too close on the show.

As the last series aired during the coronavirus pandemic, contestants had to keep two metres away from each other at all times.

He told PA: “I just think we were maybe slightly closer than two metres while we were talking.

“The BBC told us off and everything is all good and everyone is trying their best to maintain all the rules and regulations.”

He also previously described her as “so lovely and beautiful”.

During the show, Maisie said she had been enjoying getting to know her fellow contestant.

She told OK! Magazine the pair had been enjoying “harmless” flirting, but admitted she’d probably say no if he asked her out on a date.

“I’ve not been thinking about boys at the moment,” she added. “I haven’t had time. I’ve been liking getting to know him.“

HRVY got to the final of Strictly with professional dancer Janette Manrara.

He said since his stint, he’s been recognised in public by the older generation and has also had “nans” message him on Instagram.

Speaking on The One Show yesterday, the singer said he’d love his former dance partner to join him on tour.

Janette announced she had quit Strictly Come Dancing after eight years last week to join the spin-off show as a host.

The dancer will replace Zoe Ball on Strictly: It Takes Two as Rylan Clark-Neal’s new co-host.

Following her announcement, she took to Instagram to thank her fans for their supportive messages.

She went on to urge her followers to continue supporting her husband Aljaz Skorjanec on the show, which returns later this year.
