Susanna Reid: Good Morning Britain host battling agoraphobia in lockdown ‘Just too close’

GMB: Susanna says she ‘feels agoraphobic’ when going out

Susanna Reid, 50, was joined by her co-star Piers Morgan, 55, on Good Morning Britain and the pair discussed the recent snow the UK experienced at the weekend. The ITV broadcaster revealed she had been battling agoraphobia, as she struggled to understand the number of people outside despite Covid restrictions.

Sharing photos from families enjoying the snow in London’s Primrose Hill, Susanna explained: “I think I found myself getting a little bit agoraphobic, because when you go out there are so many people around.

“You’re trying to maintain your social distance but people are just too close.”

Agoraphobia is a fear of being in situations where escape may be difficult and symptoms can vary from person to person.

In some cases, people may be scared to get on public transport, visit shopping centres or leave their homes, according to the NHS.

Symptoms can include a rapid heartbeat, anxiety and hyperventilating.

Susanna admitted she had only suffered a small bout of agoraphobia, as Covid cases continue to rise in the UK.

But the presenter expressed her delight that people were able to enjoy some “light relief” with the snow falling on much of the UK.

“For the weekend, there was the light relief of the snow and plenty of people were out enjoying it, but to say anything different but thank goodness for a little break. A little respite,” Susanna remarked.

“Here’s Primrose Hill and you can see they’re trying to keep their distance, aren’t they?

“For goodness sake, we’ve got to have a moment of enjoyment.”

But her GMB co-host thought otherwise, as the TV anchor said “people should follow the rules”.

It comes as families enjoyed much of the weekend sledding and having fun in the snow.

Piers interjected: “Are they? A lot of them aren’t keeping their distance.”

“At the crest of the hill, they’re not keeping their distance,” Susanna chuckled. “I have to say it was a moment of respite.”

Piers went on: “The thing is I don’t think the virus gets the memo of a respite. Go out, get exercise and fresh air but don’t forget the rules.”

Elsewhere, Susanna appeared to have a bone to pick with her co-host after she claimed he “fat-shamed” her.

She referred to a podcast in which Piers had said: “Susanna and I have never been heavier,” as he discussed the impact of the third lockdown.

Opening the show, Susanna said: “Good morning. Why do I look twice the size of you this morning? Is it because I am overweight?

“Piers fat-shamed me at the weekend, apparently you called me overweight.”

He replied: “I apparently caused a fat storm by telling a podcast, ‘Susanna and I have never been heavier.'”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.
