I was quoted £7.5k for a bathroom renovation so did it myself – I transformed the space for £33 with buys from IKEA | The Sun

A DIY mum who was quoted almost £8k for a bathroom makeover has revealed how she gave the space a glow-up for a mere £33.

After getting a quote of an eye-watering £7.5k for her bathroom, Victoria Taylor, 42, decided to transform it herself on a tight budget.

Instead of forking out for professionals for the pricey home makeover, the marketing and communications manager from Redcar, decided to take a trip to her local B&Q and IKEA.

Sharing her story with The Latest Deals, the DIY fanatic explained that the hefty price tag was out of their budget.

Opting for a black wall in the bathroom, the 42-year-old said the glow-up was inspired by other designs she had saw and was a huge fan of.

She explained: “The offices I work in have recently been refurbished and some areas have dark and grey black ceilings.

I was fed up of my dull garden fence so gave it an amazing makeover on the cheap

“We had recently painted our skirting boards black and liked how it looked. I wanted to make the ceiling in my living room black, which is a big risk for a big room.

“So I thought we could try a smaller room on one wall to see if we liked it. We knew if it didn’t look great we could soon paint over it.”

The transformation process was mainly done with affordable tools from B&Q.

To give the walls a new look, Victoria used GoodHome Durable Liberty Matt Emulsion paint in a 2.5L can that she had nabbed for £20.

Whilst shopping, she also grabbed GoodHome Liberty Matt Furniture paint for the skirting boards that retailed for £11.

The DIYer continued: “I used GoodHome Longford Flat Matt Furniture paint for £11 too. However we saved £10 on the paint as there was a three for two offer.”

This meant that instead of forking out £41, she paid just £31, saving a tenner.

After this, she picked up plastic liners for the paint tray priced at £2.50.

The remaining bits for the project, such as rollers, brushes and leftover white emulsion, the mum had already saved from the previous DIY tasks.

The mum-of-one also reused the mirror they already had for the project.

Rather than keeping it leaning against the wall as it had all this time, she decided to hang it on the wall horizontally.

This inexpensive makeover was also a good excuse to use a large shelf Victoria had purchased from the IKEA a few months ago.

After doing some research online on how to paint the ceiling, Victoria said she took the bath legs off to give them a good wipe before painting the bath.

With the painting now completed, the DIY fanatic put the mirror and shelves up and gave the bathroom one more tidy-up to unveil the final result.

Despite the little obstacles here and there, such as getting the legs off the bath, Victoria was amazed by the makeover, saying she loved it.

Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, said: “Victoria’s decision to go DIY for her bathroom renovation paid off, saving her a whopping £7,466.50.''

He went on to say that not only Victoria saved a lot of money but also ''gained a great sense of satisfaction from completing it''.

''With the success of this bathroom renovation, who knows what DIY project she might tackle next?”
