Queen Elizabeth II’s jewellery collection contains priceless rings, necklaces, brooches and tiaras. She has one jewel with a key similarity to a piece worn by Kate Middleton and Princess Diana.
The monarch turns 95 today and it is expected to be a small family affair as the Royal Family continue to mourn the death of Prince Philip, who died on April 9.
She will not often have grand celebrations for her April birthday as it is not her official birthday.
The monarch famously has two celebrations. Today is the anniversary of her birth, but her official birthday falls on the second Saturday of June.
This is usually marked by more lavish celebrations and the monarch has worn some of her most eye-catching jewels on these dates.
The Queen is often commended for her timeless brooches and classic tiaras.
However, she has previously attracted attention with a sapphire ring which appears as those it could have inspired the engagement rings worn by Princess Diana and Kate Middleton.
Queen Elizabeth II ring
The Queen has only worn the sapphire cluster ring on a few occasions, but it has some striking similarities to pieces worn by royals since.
It had a central oval sapphire surrounded by diamonds and has a rather classic design.
The monarch has worn it as part of a diamond and sapphire set which includes earrings and a necklace.
Kate Middleton ring
Kate’s engagement ring was famously the same ring given to Princess Diana when she became engaged to Prince Charles.
The ring was originally created by the former crown jeweller Garrard & Co and features a 12-carat oval sapphire.
The Duchess of Cambridge is rarely seen without it and the piece is worth a staggering sum of money.
Experts at jewellers Joshua James explained: “Kate’s engagement ring is incredibly famous, known for sparking a huge increase in sales of sapphire engagement rings back in 2010.
“It features a 12-carat oval sapphire set in 18k white gold, surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds. Created by Garrard & Co. (the former Crown Jeweller), it is now valued at around £300,000.
“However, much of its value is sentimental: this engagement ring was passed down from Princess Diana, William’s mother.”
It is not known whether Princess Diana chose her engagement ring based on the Queen’s jewel.
However, Princess Diana was thought to have a love of sapphires so the similarities to the Queen’s ring may have simply been a coincidence.
Gemologist at Prestige Pawnbrokers of Channel 4’s Posh Pawn Alexandra Michell commented on Princess Diana’s collection featuring sapphires.
She said: “Diana had a lot of sapphire pieces.
“Sapphires were the coloured stone of choice so that Diana could wear these pieces to match her engagement ring.”
