Apple CEO Tim Cook Says Parler Was Removed From App Store For Inciting Violence

In an interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday, Apple CEO Tim Cook told Chris Wallace that Parler, the microblogging and social networking service accused of disseminating far-right conspiracy theories, could return to the App Store “if they get their moderation together.”

Cook added that company’s decision to remove Parler from Apple’s App Store was an attempt to do the right thing after insurrectionists took over the Capitol building on January 6, saying the assault was “one of the saddest moments of my life seeing an attack on our Capitol, an attack on our democracy. I felt like I was in some sort of alternate reality to be honest with you. This could not be happening.”

After the attack, Apple suspended Parler from its App Store, stating, “We have always supported diverse points of view being represented on the App Store, but there is no place on our platform for threats of violence and illegal activity. Parler has not taken adequate measures to address the proliferation of these threats to people’s safety. We have suspended Parler from the App Store until they resolve these issues.”

Cook emphasized that the App Store, which hosts over two million apps, has rules and regulations that people need to follow, adding that the service was banned after it was clearly inciting violence. “We don’t consider that free speech and incitement to violence has an intersection,” he said. “If they get their moderation together, they would be back on there.”

In the aftermath of the insurrection, Apple and Google’s app stores were called on to ban Parler after its users encouraged violence before the assault on the Capitol. Twitter also permanently suspended Donald Trump’s account over “risk of further incitement of violence” and deleted tweets the president tried to post after the ban. Facebook has also blocked Trump’s account.
