Best yoga mats 2020: A roundup of the best yoga mats you can buy

Yoga is all about getting out of your head and into your body, something we all could do with mastering during this frightening time. The practise requires very little space or equipment, making it the perfect home workout. Express.co.uk rounds up the best yoga mats, to help you find one to suit your needs.

What should you look for in a yoga mat?

Dr Bhavrik Master, Lifestyle Medicine Advocate, yogi, and Director at Meditate On (@bhavik_master)  told us exactly what to look for in a mat, to make your decision easier.

He said: “A yoga mat is mainly required for safety and protection.

“A good grip is essential to create a firm foundation for all asanas (poses), and a sticky mat with floor grip is essential to maintain both top and bottom grip.

“A thick mat is necessary to protect you joints, and so that you can hold poses which apply pressure to smaller areas like the knees and elbows for longer.

“What you look for in a mat depends on how you do your yoga. If you’re travelling then a lightweight mat is good, but I would always recommend a thick mat, or crossing over two cheaper mats.

“On top of that, a sticky mat with good floor grip is best.”

What is the average price you should pay?

Bhavrik said: “Anywhere between £25 – £70 is a reasonable amount to invest, but that is what it is, an investment in your health and wellbeing.

“A good mat will last many years, whilst cheaper ones will suffer from wear and tear quicker.

“From a sustainability point of view, as many are made from PVC, I would suggest investing in a more expensive mat that will last the years and are easy to clean.”
