Britain braced for snow, 70mph gales and a month’s rain in a single day

Britain is set to brace for strong winds, heavy  downpours and even the white stuff over the weekend.

A snowstorm bringing wind gusts of up to 70mph will batter Wales and the northern part of England.

Forecasters have issued yellow weather warnings for persistent and heavy rain in Scotland – with Argyll in western Scotland potentially facing much as 100mm of rainfall today.

Temperatures set to plummet to zero degrees in the north after towns and villages in the Cumbria, Northumberland and Lanarkshire were blanketed in snow.

The south east will avoid thw wet conditions – but will be windy at times with temperatures above the seasonal average, around 10C.

Met Office chief meteorologist Frank Saunders said: "Southerly winds will strengthen through Monday, with a very windy day forecast, particularly across the western half of the UK.

"Severe gales are likely along coastal areas, with gusts reaching 60-70mph at times along Irish Sea coastlines, the west of Scotland and perhaps some English Channel coasts, with disruption to sea, road and air travel likely.”

He continued: "There are signs of further low-pressure systems developing throughout next week which are likely to bring further gales and heavy rain almost anywhere and possible snow to  some northern parts of the UK."

Mild, windy and mostly cloudy today. Many northern and western regions will see spells of rain with some heavy rain over western Scotland. Dry across eastern, southern and central England with some bright spells.

Tonight

Cloud and rain gradually becoming confined to, roughly, the southern half of the UK. Further north becoming less windy with clear spells developing, though also some showers, mainly northwest Scotland.

Sunday

Early cloud and rain over, roughly, the southern half of the UK clearing southwards and eastwards. Otherwise sunny spells, though also some showers in the northwest, mainly northern Scotland.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday

Unsettled and very windy with rain or showers at times. The windiest and wettest conditions most likely in the west. Some snow is likely in the north, especially on hills.
