Dear Deidre gave me the courage to leave my abusive ex

I AM so happy to let you know I am writing to you from my own home where I feel safe with my six-month-old boy.

Thank you for helping me see that my future was not with my abusive ex, who is 31, five years older than me.

We had been together for just over a year. He was drinking way too much and although he never hit me, he would make terrifying threats that he would hurt me and my son if I didn’t do as I was told.

He didn’t want me to work or see any friends or family. He told me what to wear and when I could go shopping.

At first I thought he was being protective, but over time I understood his behaviour was controlling and abusive.

DEIDRE SAYS: When I wrote to you earlier this year, you helped me see how he was deliberately isolating me.

You helped me reach out to Women’s Aid and they made sure we could get to safety.

I’m so pleased you took that first courageous step and reached out for help.

Now your son can grow up without the threat of violence hanging over your heads – and you can enjoy watching him mature.
