Foot massages can relieve uncomfortable menopause symptoms from anxiety to fatigue

Transitioning into menopause can be a challenging time, and many women experience uncomfortable symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, fatigue and anxiety.

But a recent study, published in the journal Menopause, has revealed that giving a foot massage to a postmenopausal woman can improve her sleep quality and reduce some of the most persistent symptoms.

Researchers from the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) found that a foot massage can increase a woman’s average daily sleep duration by as much as one hour every night – while also reducing insomnia and anxiety.

Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director at NAMS, said: “Sleep disturbances, fatigue and anxiety symptoms are common during menopause.

“This small study in Turkish women shows how a simple, inexpensive intervention such as foot massage can improve these bothersome symptoms in postmenopausal women.

She added: “Although additional study is needed to confirm these findings in other populations of postmenopausal women, there is little downside to recommending foot massage as a non-hormonal option to help relieve symptoms.”

Hormone therapy is still widely available for woman experiencing menopause, but these findings offer an alternative to this treatment option.

Reflexology is a specific type of massage therapy which increases overall relaxation by applying pressure to areas on the feet or the hands.

Foot massages help individuals relax and restore the body’s balance by “stimulating the nerve cells located in the legs,” explained the researchers.

According to the NHS, menopause is when your periods stop due to lower hormone levels, which usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55.

There are usually three stages of this transition – perimenopause, menopause and postmenopausal – in which fluctuating hormone levels can lead to physical and mental health issues.

The findings in this study suggests a foot massage can reduce a postmenopausal women’s level of anxiety and fatigue.
