I'm out of work but use my husbands money to fund my shopping habit | The Sun
DEAR DEIDRE: WHETHER it is clothes, shoes, art or jewellery I can’t control the impulse to buy. I am a shopaholic.
I have been out of work for almost a year and I use my husband’s hard-earned money to shop because I am addicted.
I am 42 and my husband is 44.
Once I see a beautiful item, I cannot resist it and I’ll keep thinking about it until I finally buy it, even though I have no money and can’t afford it.
I lie to my husband and ask him for more cash, pretending to give it to my parents.
There have been a few times where my husband has broken down because there were so many packages coming to the house.
I am trying hard to stop and change for the better, but this shopping impulse gives me instant gratification when I click the payment button.
Do you think there is something wrong with me?

DEIDRE SAYS: Compulsive shoppers use shopping as a way of escaping negative feelings, such as depression, anxiety, boredom, and anger, as well as self-critical thoughts.
The shopping gives you a quick lift, an adrenaline rush. But it is usually short-lived.
Admitting you have a problem is halfway to sorting it.
Tell your husband you are going to get help and then talk to your GP.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is often used to treat this kind of addiction. My Counselling support pack explains more.
