Kate Middleton's 'subtle hit back' at Meghan Markle after Netflix doc

Subtle dig? Kate Middleton wears matching burgundy outfit with Pippa and Zara Tindall after Meghan Markle claimed she wasn’t allowed to wear the same color as other members of royal family in Netflix docuseries

  • Many people are convinced Kate – and some other members of the royal family – threw shade towards Meghan by wearing matching burgundy outfits
  • Kate, 40, daughter Charlotte, seven, sister Pippa, 39, and Zara Tindall, 41, all donned similar maroon-colored looks to a Christmas service on Thursday
  • The coordinated ensembles come days after Meghan claimed she often wore muted colors during appearances to avoid clashing with other royal members
  • Meghan said in her and Prince Harry’s new Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, that she tried to ‘tone down’ her outfits to ensure she didn’t overshadow anyone
  • The Duchess, 41, also said she was told she ‘shouldn’t be wearing the same color as one of the other, more senior members of the family’
  • But the royals seemed to shut these allegations down – and throw a subtle dig towards Meghan – by showing up in the same shade of red on Thursday evening

Did Kate Middleton just make a subtle dig at Meghan Markle after the release of her Netflix docuseries?

Many people on the web are convinced that the Princess of Wales – and some other members of the royal family – threw shade at the Duchess of Sussex by wearing matching burgundy outfits on Thursday evening.

Numerous members of the royal family showed up to Kate’s Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey in London in similar maroon-colored looks, just days after Meghan claimed that she often wore muted colors during appearances to avoid clashing with other royal members.

Meghan said in the third episode of her and Prince Harry’s doc, Harry & Meghan, which premiered last week that she tried to ‘tone down’ her outfits by wearing beige and white to ensure she didn’t overshadow anyone.

‘Most of the time I was in the UK, I rarely wore color. I wore a lot of muted tones, but it was so I could just blend in. Like I’m not trying to stand out here,’ she explained.

The Duchess also said she was told she ‘shouldn’t be wearing the same color as one of the other, more senior members of the family.’

‘To my understanding, you can’t ever wear the same color as Her Majesty if there’s a group event,’ she continued.

‘You also shouldn’t be wearing the same color as one of the other more senior members of the family.’

She reiterated the statement in episode five: ‘Until that last week in the UK, I rarely wore color and I never wanted to upstage or ruffle any feathers, so I just tried to blend in.’

But the royals seemed to shut these allegations down by showing up in the same shade of red on Thursday.

Meghan (seen in 2018 with the Queen) said in the third episode of the doc that she tried to ‘tone down’ her outfits by wearing beige and white to avoid overshadowing anyone

‘Most of the time I was in the UK, I rarely wore color. I wore a lot of muted tones but it was so I could just blend in. Like I’m not trying to stand out here,’ Meghan (seen in 2018 with the Duchess of Cornwall) explained

She also said she was told she ‘shouldn’t be wearing the same color as one of the other, more senior members of the family.’ Meghan is seen with Prince Harry, Prince William and Kate

Kate, 40, who hosted the service, opted for a maroon, buttoned-up, ankle-length peacoat and matching heels. She paired the look with a similar-colored clutch.

In addition, her seven-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte; sister Pippa Middleton, 39; and Princess Anne’s daughter Zara Tindall, 41, all wore alike-colored ensembles.

Upon seeing the matching outfits, many social media users wondered if it was a message to Meghan.

‘Loving the subtle hit back at Meghan yesterday saying she was forced to wear bland colors because you can’t clash with a senior royal… Imagining Kate’s group text saying “All wear your burgundy coat tonight,”‘ one person tweeted.

‘This was a shot at Meghan who said that you could not wear the same color as one of the senior members of the Royal Family. I suspect this burgundy fest was organized by Kate, and rightly so. Making a point in a very subtle but impactful way,’ another added.

‘This was one way to respond,’ a third person joked.

In the six-part docuseries, Harry, 38, and Meghan, 41, made a series of bombshell accusations about the royals.

Harry claimed his family became jealous that Meghan was ‘doing the job better’ and ‘stealing the limelight’ from ‘those born to do it’ – so they pursued a vendetta against her.

Harry also said his older brother, Prince William, 40, scared him in January 2020 when he ‘screamed and shouted’ at him in front of his father and grandmother when he tried to thrash out a deal to leave the UK.

He said: ‘It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me and my father say things that just simply weren’t true. And my grandmother, you know, quietly sit there and take it all in.’

In addition, the Duke claimed the Palace did not seek his permission to put out a joint statement, denying claims that William ‘bullied’ the Sussexes out of the Royal Family.

‘I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that,’ he said.

‘[Meghan] burst into floods of tears, because within four hours they were happy to lie to protect my brother… and yet they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us.’
