THOUSANDS of households could be waiting until after 6pm for the postman to arrive as part of a massive Royal Mail shake-up.

In a bid to speed up the delivery of packages, the postal service wants posties to dish out packages later in the day.

According to The Daily Telegraph, 17 areas across the UK might not get their post until 6pm at the earliest.

These include parts of London, Cornwall, Cumbria, Wales and Scotland.

Households in Kinross, near Perth, could be waiting until as late as 7:30pm.

While around 100 other areas could be waiting until 5pm or later for parcels to land through their letterbox.

Letters – not just packages – could arrive later as well.

A Royal Mail spokesperson confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that while letters are delivered by 4pm at the latest now, this could be pushed back until 5pm.

They added: "We are in discussion with the Communication Workers Union about moving start times later to meet the growing customer demand for more next day parcel deliveries, and to reduce our environmental impact by moving more mail by rail over time.

“We have made it clear that these proposals are all subject to negotiation and detailed design, and no plans have been finalised."

It's the latest in a number of delivery shake-ups at the Royal Mail.
