Melinda and Bill Gates are worth over $100billion, or £72billion. After 27 years of marriage and three children together, the power couple are divorcing. How much will Melinda soon be worth?
Melinda and Bill Gates are currently the richest couple in the world, but the pair are to soon go their separate ways after deciding to file for divorce.
The couple have a combined net worth of $120billion, or £86billion, according to Celebrity Net Worth, but Melinda’s fortune alone is also set to be huge.
On the day the Gates announced their divorce, 3 May, Bill transferred £1.43billion in stocks to his wife, according to Bloomberg.
Additionally, in the divorce appeal that Melinda filed, the philanthropist requested that her and her husband’s fortune be split equally.
If this happens, Melinda will therefore have a total net worth of $65.25billion, or around £47billion, according to Forbes.
This means that the philanthropist and author could soon become the world’s second-richest woman.
Currently, the richest woman in the world is L’Oréal owner Françoise Bettencourt Meyers, whose inherited fortune is worth around $83billion, or £60billion.
On Monday this week, 3 May, Bill and Melinda announced their divorce in a joint statement, after being married for 27 years.

Melinda said in court filings that the billionaires’ marriage was “irretrievably broken.”
The former Microsoft general manager started dating Bill in 1987, after meeting him at a trade fair in New York.
The pair married in 1994 in Hawaii, and they have three children together called Jennifer, Phoebe, and Rory.
The power couple’s family home is a lakefront estate worth more than $131million in the suburbs of Seattle, but it is not yet clear who will get the house amid the divorce.
Melinda has expressed her desire to live in a smaller house in the past.
She told The New York Times in 2019: “We won’t have that house forever. I’m actually really looking forward to the day that Bill and I live in a 1,500-square foot house.”
Outside of her relationship with Bill, Melinda is a powerful and successful individual in her own right.
As a teenager, she developed an interest in computer science and went on to study the subject at Duke University, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1986.
In 1987, she completed a master’s degree at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business.
Melinda’s first job was as a tutor in mathematics and computer programming, before she went on to become a marketing manager with Microsoft and later, in the early 1990s, a general manager.
In 2000, Bill and Melinda launched the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is the largest private foundation in the world, holding around $47billion in assets.
The foundation’s aims are to enhance healthcare and reduce global poverty.
Melinda has focused much on her philanthropy work since co-launching the foundation and has also made it one of her life goals to increase diversity in the workplace, encouraging women to work in technology.
Melinda is recognised as one of the world’s most powerful women, ranking fifth on the list of Forbes’ 100 Most Powerful Women last year.
She has been named third on the list four times in the past.
