Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Christmas Card Breaks Royal Tradition and Archie Steals the Show
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Christmas card is here and it definitely isn’t what fans are used to seeing from the royal family. The Sussexes have included baby Archie in a unique way — and it’s so relatable to any parent who has tried to capture the perfect family portrait for their holiday card.
Baby Archie’s first Christmas card revealed
The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust tweeted the Sussex family Christmasgreeting, noting: “Just sharing the sweetest Christmas Card from our Presidentand Vice-President, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Very Merry Christmas, everyone!”
The card features mom and dad smiling in the background asArchie takes center stage, up close and personal, staring into the camera.
The card reads: “Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and aHappy New Year. From our family to yours.”
Prince Harry and Markle’s card breaks royal tradition
Prince Harry and Markle’s card has to be a first in the royal family — it’s a GIF!
Additionally, the family decided to do away with a stuffy formal pose or release a perfect photo and instead used a candid shot. It’s unclear if the family had initially been posing in front of the tree on the floor in hopes of snagging one of those perfect photos, but Archie was captured crawling towards the camera as his parents share a laugh in the background.
By comparison, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Christmas card was leaked early and featured a more classic family pose with their children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. They did pose on a vintage motorcycle sidecar, making the image a bit less formal.
Last year, Prince Harry and Markle’s first Christmas card as a couple was also unconventional — they were photographed from behind watching a fireworks display at their royal wedding evening reception at Frogmore House.
The palace noted in a statement at the tme: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to share a new photograph from their Wedding Reception at Frogmore House on 19th May. The photograph, which was taken by photographer Chris Allerton, features on Their Royal Highnesses’ Christmas card this year.”

It was rumored that Doria Ragland would be in the card photo
It was believed that Prince Harry and Markle’s Christmas card would include the Duchess of Sussex’s mother, Doria Ragland.
A source told E! News: “Harry and Meghan are said to want [to] ensure that some of their Christmas card images reflect that Doria is very much part of their family and of Archie’s upbringing. It is a break with protocol from traditional royal Christmas cards, which haven’t historically included grandparents. For instance, Kate’s parents — Carole Middleton and Michael Middleton — have never appeared on any of their Christmas card images.”
Prince Harry and Markle are also taking a break from royal tradition and skipping the annual Christmas at Sandringham with the queen and royal family.
The palace had announced their plans in a November statementthat noted: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are looking forward toextended family time towards the end of this month. Having spent the last twoChristmases at Sandringham, Their Royal Highnesses will spend the holiday thisyear, as a new family, with the Duchess’ mother Doria Ragland. This decision isin line with precedent set previously by other members of the Royal Family, andhas the support of Her Majesty The Queen.”
