Stars that have swapped between popular soaps as Michelle Keegan’s onscreen dad pops up in Emmerdale

When actors secure a role on a popular soap it can be their career made, with many choosing to stay loyal to their chosen programme for decades to come.

And of course as soap fans we love to see our favourites and get lost in their colourful onscreen daily lives on the likes of EastEnders, Emmerdale, Coronation Street and Hollyoaks.

But for some actors one soap isn't always enough, or they fancy a new challenge and have braved the swap, leaving behind their iconic roles for other fictional land…

Most recently eagle-eyed viewers spotted actor Reece Dinsdale arrive in Emmerdale, who had previously appeared in Coronation Street as Michelle Keegan's onscreen dad.

He's not the only one who have taken the plunge into different soap lands, with stars like Gemma Atkinson, Adam Rickitt, Claire King and Anthony Quinlan all making the swap.

So which of our favourite stars have been lucky enough to appear in more than one soap? Let's find out…

Reece Dinsdale

Emmerdale newcomer Paul first appeared in April as the real dad of Mandy Dingle's fake son Vinny.

But it wasn't the first ITV soap that actor Reece Dinsdale has shown up in, as he played Tina McIntyre's (Michelle Keegan) dad Joe on Coronation Street between 2008 and 2010.

Gail Platt's husband battled debt in the soap and was killed off as he tried to fake his own death. He's already directed episodes of Emmerdale, and has appeared in Waterloo Road, Silent Witness and Taggart.

Catherine Tyldesley

Catherine Tyldesley was better known as Eva Price in Coronation Street, who she played for seven years from 2011.

But before bagging the coveted role of a barmaid in the Rovers Return, Cath played Abi Peterson in Emmerdale for two months in 2010.

Adam Rickitt

Adam Rickitt made his name as Gail Platt's heartthrob son Nick Tilsley on Coronation Street between 1997-1999, including his teen marriage and divorce to Leanne Battersby. He returned briefly in 2002 until 2004.

The soap star then had an illustrious pop career before joining the cast of Hollyoaks in 2017 as Kyle Kelly who suffers with MS.

Gemma Atkinson

Gemma Atkinson played Lisa Hunter on Hollyoaks from 2001-2005, and was noted for her harrowing storylines on bullying and self-harming. She went on to play Lisa in the show's late night spin-off, Hollyoaks: Let Loose and In The City.

After that came to an end Gemma went on to star in Casualty before joining Emmerdale in 2015 as Carly Hope until she left in 2017.

Danniella Westbrook

Perhaps most famous for her role as the sister of Grant and Phil Mitchell, Samantha Mitchell, Danniella Westbrook starred in the BBC soap in the early nineties.

But due to her personal problem with drug addiction, Danniella was axed from the show but returned intermittently from 1995 until 2010 when she was replaced by actress Kim Medcalf.

She then went on to star in Hollyoaks in 2013 as Trudy Ryan before she was axed from the soap. Danniella did reprise her role as Sam for four episodes in 2016, and has since talked about a desire to return to the Square once again.

Michelle Collins

Michelle Collins played the iconic villan Cindy Beale for a decade from 1988 where she constantly stirred up as much drama as possible for her husband Ian Beale.

She was killed off in 1998 during childbirth and did the ultimate soap switch changing channels from BBC to ITV starring in Coronation Street as Stella Price the landlady of the Rovers Return. She quit the soap in 2014.

Gillian Taylforth

Gillian Taylforth appeared in EastEnders from 1985 playing Ian Beale's mum Kathy Beale onscreen until 1998. But she was killed off screen in 2006 in a car crash in South Africa.

As well as a stint on the iconic Footballers' Wives, the soap star then went onto join Hollyoaks in 2013 playing mum of five Sandy Roscoe.

But then in 2015 Gillian made a shock return to Walford when Kathy returned as part of the 30th anniversary episode and has stuck around ever since.

Anthony Quinlan

Anthony Quinlan played Hollyoaks fan-favourite Gilly Roach from 2005 until 2011, the character was consistently unlucky in love and his exit storyline came when he was accused of rape by Jacqui McQueen with the actor leaving as the jury came to a conclusion.

Anthony totally transformed from playing Gilly when he joined Emmerdale as Pete Barton in 2013, but has recently quit the role with fans convinced that he is set to return to Hollyoaks as part of the soap's 25th anniversary.

Nikki Sanderson

Nikki Sanderson played Sarah Platt's rebellious school friend Candice Stowe on Coronation Street from 1999, until she left the soap to become a hairdresser.

The actress then went on to join Hollyoaks in 2012 playing Maxine Minniver, and has starred in over 500 episodes making her second soap role her longest.

Claire King

Claire King will always be known for her role as iconic TV bitch Kim Tate on Emmerdale which she played for ten years between 1989 and 1999.

She made her return to the Dales in 2018, but in between Claire popped up on Hollyoaks in the spin-off series, and also appeared as Erica Holroyd on Coronation Street from 2014 until 2017.

Chris Bisson

Chris Bisson has been playing Jai Sharma in Emmerdale since joining the soap in 2009. But way before then he was better known as corner shop owner Vikram Desai who he played in Coronation Street between 1999–2002.
