Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have called their daughter Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, paying tribute to the Queen and the late Princess Diana.

However it would appear that Harry has held the name Lili dear for quite some time, and there's a standout moment which saw the prince picking out the moniker for his future daughter, years before she was born.

As Meghan, 39, and Harry awaited the arrival of their son Archie Harrison, the couple met locals in Birkenhead, Wirral.

At the time, Meghan was six months pregnant and neither she nor Harry knew the sex of their baby, in a bid to keep it a surprise.

Harry spoke to a member of the public during the visit, and she was a mother of two girls named Lottie and Lily.

The mother told how Harry asked how to spell her daughter Lily's name, curious as to whether it was with an 'I' or 'Y'.

She told the Mailonline at the time: "Prince Harry came over first and chatted to my two-year-old then spoke to my six-year-old Lily and then as he was walking off, he turned back he asked Lily of she spent her name with a I or Y.

"I straight away thought that must be a name choice."

The sweet name of Lili was correctly predicted by OK! days before it was announced, as a royal expert told us it would be the surprise name of choice for Harry and Meghan.

"It would be a lovely nod to The Queen who was known as 'Lillibet' during her childhood but it's also always been one of Harry's favourite names," the expert explained, while also referencing Harry's interest in the name during his and Meghan's 2019 walkabout.

On top of that, Meghan chose a plant called Lily of the Valley for her bridesmaids' flower crowns.

On Sunday, the couple revealed they had welcomed their daughter on Friday 4 June at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, California, at 11.40am, weighing 7lb 11oz.

As well as paying tribute to the Queen and Harry's late mother Princess Diana, the name also may have included a sweet nod to Meghan's mother, Doria Ragland.

Journalist Afua Adom said on Good Morning Britain that it was "not just about being named after the Queen".

She explained: "Lilibet is such a pretty name, it's such a cute name. It is not just about being named after the Queen.

"It is a bit of a nod to Meghan's mother Doria as well, because Meghan's mother's nickname for her is flower, hence why we've got Lili in there for Lilibet."

Susanna Reid wasn't convinced, saying the claim was "a bit of a stretch".
