TV Ratings: ‘Mare of Easttown’ Finale Is Most-Watched Episode of Any HBO Original Series on HBO Max
The May 30 finale of “Mare of Easttown” drew four million viewers across Memorial Day Weekend, with nearly three million viewers Sunday night on all HBO platforms, marking a series high for the WarnerMedia premium cabler’s linear and digital outlets. The series stars Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Kate Winslet from creator Brad Ingelsby (“The Way Back”) with all episodes directed by Craig Zobel, who previously worked with HBO on “The Leftovers” and “Westworld.”
The seventh episode of the limited series focused on the fictitious but realistic family of Easttown in Pennsylvania, titled “Sacrament,” set a record as the most-watched episode of an HBO original series on the network’s streaming platform during its first 24 hours of availability. It bested the finales of recent HBO hits “The Undoing” and “The Flight Attendant” over the same period of time. “Mare of Easttown,” which first dropped on Sunday, April 18 on HBO, explored the dark side of a close community and an authentic explanation of how family and past tragedies can define our present. Winslet, who had previously led HBO’s “Mildred Pierce,” stars as titular protagonist Mare Sheehan, a small-town detective who investigates a local murder amid family drama.
Audiences for “The Mare of Easttown” grew each and every week, allowing the series to join “The Undoing” as the only show in HBO’s history to grow consecutively with each episode. Viewership of the series will continue to build significantly once additional telecasts and digital viewing are factored in the rating measurements.
“Mare of Easttown” is an HBO co-production with wiip (“Dickinson”), which was recently acquired by South Korea’s JTBC Studios. Showrunner Ingelsby wrote and executive produced alongside director Zobel and Paul Lee and Mark Roybal (via wiip). Winslet also executive produces with Gavin O’Connor and Gordon Gray through Mayhem Pictures. “Mare of Easttown” also stars Evan Peters, Guy Pearce, Angourie Rice, Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Jack Mulhern, Cailee Spaeny, Ben Miles, Chinasa Ogbuagu and Kiah McKirnan, among others.
