With a uterus dress, Gucci makes a pro-choice statement on Cruise 2020 fashion line
Gucci is no stranger to controversy, nor is it wary of taking a political stance. This week, the fashion house welcomed both with its latest runway show.
On Tuesday night, Gucci debuted its 2020 Cruise showcase, presenting multiple clothing pieces that took a pro-choice perspective with feminist slogans and images.
The evening took place in Rome at the Capitolini Museums, not far away from the Vatican church. In attendance were the likes of Harry Styles, A$AP Rocky and Elton John.
A chiffon dress, for example, is adorned with a uterus, while blazers and coats are emblazoned with the iconic feminist phrase “My Body, My Choice.”

The collection was filled with ornate patterns and flowy, bell-bottomed pants. Both in concept and style, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele says he was inspired by the ’70s culture from which the movement for reproductive rights emerged.
“It was a historical moment when women — finally — rejected all the constraints that were imposed in the previous centuries and they became free,” Michele told Women’s Wear Daily in an interview.
The collection comes two weeks after Alabama signed a near-total abortion ban into law, and the same day as Planned Parenthood officials announced the possible closing of its last clinic in Missouri.
The luxury house’s latest collection comes a year after it donated $500,000 to March for Our Lives, and months after it came under fire for a sweater that portrays blackface. More recently, Gucci came under fire for cultural appropriation after selling a turban that costs $790.
