The One Direction alum made a rare comment about fatherhood in a “Call Her Daddy” podcast episode set to air on Wednesday.
“Since I’ve had my daughter, the main thing in my mind is trying to be a good example to her,” Malik — who shares daughter, Khai, 2 with model Gigi Hadid — said in a teaser video posted to Instagram.
Speaking to host Alex Cooper for his first interview in six years, he added, “That’s why I’m even doing this interview, you know? I used to get a lot of anxiety around having a conversation like this. And I want her to be able to look at me and be like, ‘Yo, my dad’s doing this.’”
As to how he has transitioned into his role as a dad, he said, “I keep being told I’m telling dad jokes. And I’m leaning into it. I’m just like, ‘It’s OK. It’s cool.’ People just look at me like I’m a weirdo, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m a dad, I’m allowed to tell these jokes now.’”
The “Pillowtalk” singer, 30, then admitted that his view on life has shifted since he welcomed Khai with Hadid, 28, in September 2020.
“There’s a certain point in adult life where everything is vague and gray and boring and she’s brought that color back for me for sure.”

The “Better” singer and Hadid first met in 2015 at a Victoria’s Secret party. The couple was then on and off for almost six years.
During their time apart, Hadid was romantically linked to race car driver Lewis Hamilton and “Bachelorette” alum Tyler Cameron.
Once back together again in 2020, the pair welcomed Khai in September. However, by October 2021, they officially called it quits after an altercation that involved Gigi’s mom, Yolanda Hadid.
At the time, “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” alum alleged Malik had pushed her. But, despite Malik denying the accusation and pleading no contest to the charges, he was sentenced to nearly a year of probation and domestic violence and anger management programs.
Since then, the two have solely worked together to co-parent their daughter.
