‘Best game of my career’ – Arsenal loanee William Saliba reflects on staggering performance in Marseille draw with PSG

ARSENAL loanee William Saliba said he played the 'best game of his career' as Marseille's drew with Paris Saint-Germain.

The Frenchman was phenomenal as he kept Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe quiet in the 0-0 at the Stade Velodrome.

PSG right-back Achraf Hakimi was sent off just before the hour mark but the Ligue 1 leaders continued to press.

Saliba made a particularly superb last-ditch challenge on Mbappe in the 83rd minute as the superstar was through on goal.

The tackle capped a thoroughly brilliant showing and the 20-year-old reckons he has never played better.

Speaking after the game, Saliba said: "I saw he made the ball so I was like, 'Either take the red or I take the ball'.

"I tackled the ball well so there you go.

"It’s the best game of my career, playing a 'Classique' at the Velodrome with this atmosphere."

PSG are still top having won nine, lost one and drawn once in their opening 11 games as Marseille sit fourth.

Despite the seemingly impressive draw, Saliba – who is on a season-long loan from the Emirates – said Marseille's players were disappointed they didn't get more from the game.

He reflected: "Today we drew, it’s not that bad. We lacked a little efficiency, but from Wednesday we will try to bring all three points.

"It was a very good game, they scored the first offside goal, we equalised but that was also offside.

"It was a very good game with chances on both sides. With the red card, we hoped to bring back the three points but hey we drew.

"We must not be too downhearted and we must go forward.

"There is some regret because with the red card we would have hoped to take the three points, but we drew and it’s not that bad.

"They had the man sent off with 35 minutes left. At the start we had possession, then even with 10 men they managed to gain some momentum.

"Up top they have the best players in the world and we had to stay focused. Even with a man down they managed to keep the ball and attack.

"The most important thing is that we didn’t concede a goal. Overall we had a good game.

"We showed a great spirit, we fought until the end and that’s what we want here."

Fans were in awe of Saliba's performance and the stats back them up.

The France U-21 international was solid in defence as he won five of six duels, three tackles, made an interception and a clearance apiece, and won his only aerial duel.

He also impressed with the ball at his feet as he played 57 passes with an accuracy of 96 per cent.
