Darts ace Van den Bergh suffers second health scare in 48 hours

Darts ace Dimitri van den Bergh has reportedly been ordered to rest after suffering a second health scare in 48 hours.

The former World Matchplay champion felt unwell during the German Darts Open in Jena at the weekend and was checked over by medical personnel following his quarter-final victory over Krzysztof Ratajski. The DreamMaker was able to continue in the tournament but looked uncomfortable at times during his semi-final win over José De Sousa. He went on to lose 8-6 to Peter Wright in the final.

“During that [the quarter-final], my heart rate suddenly went very fast," said Van den Bergh after the tournament.

“I tried to get it down after that. Fortunately, there were friends of mine in the room who told me to keep calm. I don't know what was wrong. A panic attack? I don't know.

“I could have made the decision to forfeit after the quarter-finals, but I'm proud that I persevered and finally made it to the final. Thanks to the fans for getting me through this episode.”

Van den Bergh reportedly suffered the same symptoms on Tuesday and paid a visit to hospital to be assessed.

His girlfriend, Evi Loyaerts, per nieuwsblad.be, issued an update, saying: “So there will have to be further investigations. And sleep/rest well and live healthier.”

It remains to be seen if his health scare will affect his involvement in this weekend’s World Series Finals in Amsterdam. The England-based Belgian is due to face Danny Baggish or Ryan Joyce in the second round on Saturday.

The 28-year-old is the top seed for the tournament having won two other World Series events this year, the Nordic Masters and Dutch Masters.
