26′ – A terrible error from Newcastle!

Botman passes the ball back towards Pope and doesn’t see Dennis coming across from the left-hand side.

The forward picks up the ball, takes it around the goalkeeper and coolly slots his effort into the Magpies’ net with a sublime chip.

1-0 Forest!

22′ – Paul Tierney causes a chorus of boos around the City Ground as he blows up while Forest launch a counter-attack, penalising Dennis for a challenge on Trippier.

The referee becomes even more unpopular as he books the forward after the tackle.

20′ – Forest carve out a fruitful period of possession and find Aurier in a promising position on the right flank, but the full-back overhits his cross and hands Newcastle a goal kick.

18′ – Johnson cuts inside on to his left foot from the right flank and drills a long-distance effort down the throat of Pope.

15′ – Guimaraes and Willock are linking up well and keeping Newcastle deep in Forest territory at the moment.

The home side are doing well to hold off wave after wave of attack from Newcastle, but the visitors are looking very lively.

12′ – Clever free-kick from Newcastle nearly pays off!

Trippier threads the ball under the wall towards Isak, who fires an effort on goal inside the penalty box, but his shot ricochets off Aurier and Lodi before striking the crossbar.

Forest survive by the barest of margins!

9′ – Yates and Willock are already clashing in midfield, as the Forest man chops the Newcastle star down early on.

Moments later, Yates charges at Willock to barge him off the pitch and win a throw, and there’s a bit of afters as the pair push each other on the touchline.

Passionate start from the midfielders.

6′ – Trippier releases Murphy on the right flank and the winger drills a ball into the area in the direction of Willock.

The ball falls to the midfielder’s left foot and he flashes his effort high and wide, squandering the opportunity.

Newcastle have got to start burying these sorts of chances…

5′ – Schar gets back to his feet in the hope of returning but is obviously still in considerable pain following Ayew’s tackle.

It looks like he’s going to continue for now…

3′ – Ayew makes a rash challenge from behind on Schar and is somewhat fortunate to evade a booking. The Swiss centre-back stays down as the referee blows for a stoppage in play.

2′ – Trippier and Guimaraes link up well early on and Shelvey gets stuck in early, chopping down the Brazilian and giving away a free-kick on the halfway line.

Checking in at the City Ground 💫

Evening, @NavasKeylor 👋🇨🇷

Newcastle returned to winning ways last weekend with a 2-1 win over Wolves, bouncing back after three successive defeats to Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool.

The Magpies endured the upset of a Carabao Cup final defeat during that run but will hope the disappointment is now behind them, as Eddie Howe focuses on launching them into Europe next season.

Newcastle have two games in hand over Tottenham, who are four points ahead of them in fourth, and a two point buffer over Liverpool.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest are one of nine teams faced with the threat of relegation, although Steve Cooper has done well to steer his club out of immediate danger thus far.

Forest have a two-point cushion above the relegation zone and have picked up most of their points at home this season, unbeaten in the league at the City Ground in their last nine matches.

The Premier League has returned after the thrills and spills of European action this week, which saw Manchester City thump seven past RB Leipzig in the Champions League and Arsenal crash out of the Europa League on penalties.

The European dream is still very much alive for Eddie Howe’s side next season, although there is little room for error with Tottenham and Liverpool both firmly in the race for fourth spot.

Newcastle can go within a point of Tottenham with a win, while Nottingham Forest can jump five points clear of the relegation zone with victory.
