Peter Wright in tears as he wins World Cup of Darts with John Henderson

Scottish pair Peter Wright and John Henderson struggled to contain their emotions as they won the World Cup of Darts after fending off the challenge of surprise finalists Austria.

Current World Matchplay champion Wright could not hold back the tears as he lifted the trophy alongside Henderson, who was celebrating his first ever title in a tournament broadcast on TV.

The latter was a last-minute replacement for Gary Anderson, but it didn't disrupt Scotland's chances as they became just the second nation to win the World Cup with different pairings.

Meanwhile, it was Wright's second time celebrating victory in this competition, after winning alongside Anderson in 2019.

The pair enjoyed a comfortable start to the competition at the Sparkassen-Arena in Jena, Germany, blowing China away 5-0 before comfortably dispatching the pair from Poland.

That set up a quarter-final clash with Dutch third seeds Michael van Gerwen and Dirk van Duijvenbode, which the Scots won in the doubles decider after Wright's win over the latter made up for Henderson's defeat to MvG in the singles matches.

Another 2-1 win in the semi-final over Wales set up a shootout against Austrian pair Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez, who had shocked English duo James Wade and Dave Chisnall in the last four.

The two countries were locked one apiece after Wright's win over Rodriguez made up for Henderson's defeat at the hands of Suljovic, but the pair edged the doubles before Wright beat Suljovic in his second singles match to put the result beyond doubt.

Both were visibly emotional as they collected their trophy in front of the cheering German crowd.

As they went on to toast their victory by lifting the trophy in front of the fans, Wright could be seen wiping tears away from his eyes as Henderson went up first.
