Rays broadcaster Dave Wills roots for Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton to get hurt
The Rays’ animosity toward the Yankees extends to the broadcast booth.
The Yankees took a convincing 9-3 win in Game 1 of the ALDS over the Rays on Monday behind a solo blast from Aaron Judge and a grand slam from Giancarlo Stanton.
Both Judge and Stanton have battled injuries this season — and throughout their career in pinstripes — but have returned to the lineup for the postseason. A healthy Yankees lineup makes for an even bigger challenge for the Rays, something the Tampa Bay broadcast made a point to acknowledge in a questionable way.
In the seventh inning, Judge hustled down the line in an attempt to beat out a double play throw to first base. That prompted Rays play-by-play man Dave Wills on WDAE to allude to rooting for Judge and Stanton to re-aggravate their injuries.
“I’ll tell you what, if you’re the Rays, again you want to see Aaron Judge trying to sprint and prevent a double play,” Wills said. “You want to see that from Stanton and maybe they get some of those recurring leg issues that they’ve had in the past bounce back again.”
With the controversy growing, Wills was defiant on Twitter.
“Have never and will never wish an injury on any player… it was merely a comment that guys busting it up the line who have had leg injuries in the past could reaggravate it…no need for apology…Period,” Wills said.
