XABI ALONSO has emerged as favourite for the Tottenham job.

That's according to bookmakers Betfair, who've installed the Bayer Leverkusen head coach at 9/4 to be in charge for Spurs' first game of the 2023-24 Premier League season.

Tottenham are still looking for a permanent appointment to replace Antonio Conte, who was relieved of his duties in March following an extraordinary public rant.

Cristian Stellini took interim charge before he was shown the door after the humiliating collapse in the 6-1 defeat at Newcastle, with Ryan Mason since taking charge.

Julian Nagelsmann was considered the initial favourite, before Brendan Rodgers, Mauricio Pochettino and Luis Enrique all occupied favouritism since then, before it went full circle with Nagelsmann again leading the way.

Spurs admire the former Liverpool midfielder, who took over at Bayer Leverkusen in October and has guided them to sixth position in the Bundesliga and into the semi-finals of the Europa League.

However, the 41-year-old has stated his intention to remain in Germany next season.

He said: "Rumours are normal but we still have a lot to achieve.

"That's why my head is 100 percent here for the last few months. And my head is also 100 percent here for next season."

Nagelsmann remains in the mix at 3/1, ahead of Vincent Kompany and Feyenoord manager Arne Slot, who are locked together at 8/1.

A lack of Champions League football at Spurs next year could put one or two off, despite it being in their hands for much of the campaign.
