Wayne Mardle jokes fan has spent more time on him than his wife has with artwork
Darts legend Wayne Mardle made a joke with a fan on Twitter at the expense of his wife over an intricate pice of artwork.
‘Hawaii 501’ is regularly active on the social media platform both tweeting about the sport and interacting with his followers about his biggest passion. User @MaltmanEvents tweeted the 49-year-old with a graphic from a video featuring a picture of Mardle in one of his famous Hawaii-style darts shirts, along with the words ‘Hawaii 501, legend of darts and commentary’.
The Twitter follower wrote: “Little still of the wonderful @Wayne501Mardle from a little video I made – loving the colours!!” Appreciating the kind gesture, Mardle responded to the tweet and included his wife of 22 years, Donna.
“I like it! You’ve literally spent more time on me than my wife has in 22 years of marriage!,” he chuckled. Thinking he would be safe from his spouse seeing it, he added: “She’s not on Twitter, I can say what I like,” with a grin face emoji. The fan then hit back: “Brave when no one's listening!!! Wait till you see it in its animated glory.”

Since calling time on his darts career, Mardle has become one of the most recognisable voices in darts with fans tuning in to hear his unique analysis on matches on Sky Sports. Last week, viewers asked about his absence from the commentary booth during the ongoing Premier League. The pundit didn't carry out his usual duties for night four in Dublin, which was won by Michael van Gerwen.
And he was missing for the darts action once again in Exeter and for the thrilling performances of Van Gerwen in Liverpool this week. One questioned: "How come you’ve not been there the last two weeks? Not the same without you on comms."
"You on tonight," asked a second, while a third wrote: "Why hasn’t Wayne Mardle been there last two weeks?" But Mardle moved to quickly alleviate their fears, tweeting: "To all those asking, I’ll be back in a few weeks. Just recovering from an operation. Nothing to worry about thank god."
Van Gerwen got a measure of revenge against Michael Smith following his World Championship final defeat as he prevailed 6-4 to claim his third-straight Premier League win. In a topsy-turvy encounter, Van Gerwen went one game away from a third win after pinning double eight against the throw.
Smith continued to challenge him, but narrowly missed the bullseye that would have taken it to a decider. Van Gerwen took full advantage and nailed the double 10 to claim a third successive victory. He currently sits eight points clear of Smith at the top of the Premier League table ahead of next week's action in Nottingham.
