Wrexham’s terrific season that saw them recently win promotion to League Two could get even better after co-owner Rob McElhenney hilariously tried to convince Gareth Bale to join his side.

The Welsh side’s hollywood owners McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have enjoyed delirious success at Wrexham since securing full ownership of the side in 2021.

The pair have invested heavily in the newly-crowned National League champions and could be braced to splash out even more finances if they are able to convince former Real Madrid and Tottenham winger Bale to join the side.

Bale retired from playing in January at the relatively young age of just 33, only seven months after joining American side LAFC.

He has been enjoying his retirement relaxing and playing on some of the world’s best golf courses but recently took time out of his day to send a congratulations message to the Wrexham owners.

McElhenney published the video on his twitter account where a long-haired Bale said: ‘Hi Rob, just want to congratulate you on your promotion and everything you are doing at Wrexham.

He rounded off his message by holding a thumbs up to camera. The video has been viewed over 70,000 times with keen Wrexham fans begging the Welsh legend to join their side.

An excited McElhenney posted in response to the viral clip: ‘Hey Gareth Bale let’s play golf, where I totally won’t spend four hours trying to convince you to un-retire for one last magical season.

Although some Wrexham supporters are dreaming of seeing the 33-year-old don the red and white shirt in English football’s fourth-tier next season, the request appears to be tongue-in-cheek.

Bale has never played in a division lower than the Championship while in England and during his stellar career won five Champions League titles, three LaLiga trophies, and a single Spanish Cup at Madrid.

Meanwhile McElhenny admitted that winning promotion with Wrexham had been the ‘honour of his life’ following the club’s title-clinching victory over Boreham Wood.

Amidst wild celebrations, McElhenney explained: ‘We can hear how it feels to the town and that is what is most important to us. I think this is a moment of catharsis for them and celebration,’ he added.

‘For us to be welcomed into their community and welcomed into this experience has been the honour of my life.’
