BBC The One Show turns awkward as Downton Abbey star makes Boris Johnson dig

Downton Abbey actor appeared on BBC's The One Show and made a brutal dig towards Boris Johnson.

The actor starred on the show on Wednesday (April 13) to promote his new series with Julie Roberts, titled Gaslit.

However, during his time on the show he shocked hosts Alex Jones and Jermaine Jenas with his remarks about the country's Prime Minister.

Gaslit is based upon a political media scandal that Dan likens to our very own current situation which involves Boris and his party.

Alex asked Dan about the series and said: "What's the take then on it?"

Dan then replied: “What you’ve got is a criminal for a leader who is wrapped in a messy war, embroiled in a stupid scandal and surrounded by ambitious idiots and really should resign… I’m sorry that’s the intro to Boris Johnson.”

Gasps were heard in the studio and the expressions on the TV hosts' faces made it clear that they weren't expecting the humorous remark.

Alex looked wide-eyed and almost eye-rolled at his state

The presenting pair looked pretty speechless afterwards and swiftly tried to move on to the next topic.

Fans at home watching spurred Dan on for his comments and were less impressed with the BBC hosts' response.

One fan commented on Alex's reaction and said: "Probably worried she'll get an angry producer in her ear or something"

"She does not seem into it," replied another.

While a third penned: "Typical BBC presenters…Scared of expressing as opinion"

Others expressed their joy at the actor's remarks and said: "This is INCREDIBLE."

"As if I couldn't love Dan Stevens any more," another shared.

Another user tweeted: "Oh that's hilarious!"

"Mathew from Downton Abbey doing the Lord's work," quipped another fan.

The new series tackles the Watergate scandal and focuses on the perspective of Martha Mitchell (Julia Roberts), the wife of Richard Nixon's attorney general, John Mitchell (Sean Penn).

Dan plays the role of John Dean in the limited series which also features Betty Gilpin as Mo Dean, Shea Whigham as G. Gordon Liddy and Darby Camp as Marty Mitchell.

Gaslit” will be released on Starz’s digital platform at midnight on April 24.

The One Show airs Monday to Friday on BBC One at 7pm
