BBC One typically airs both EastEnders and The One Show on a Friday evening. However, neither of them are going to be shown tonight, Friday, April 7, as they were cancelled earlier on. In fact, the TV schedule for the channel has been altered for most of the day.
Why have all the TV shows been cancelled tonight on BBC One?
BBC One’s usual programmes have been cancelled in a last-minute change to tonight’s programming.
As well as the weekly regulars, the channel was going to show the Masterchef final where one of the three finalists would be crowned as the 2021 champion.
However, the final has also been postponed until a later date which has yet to be announced.
But there is a very good reason for the sudden changes in BBC One schedule.
The BBC has altered its entire programming for today following the news of the death of Prince Philip.
Earlier today, it was announced by the Royal Family that the Duke of Edinburgh had died at Windsor Castle at the age of 99.
A BBC spokesperson said: “With the sad news that HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, has died, there is now special coverage across all BBC networks to mark his life of extraordinary public service and planned scheduling has been suspended.”
Instead, there have been numerous news programmes discussing Prince Philip’s death and sharing tributes as they come in from those who knew him best.
This is the BBC’s schedule for the rest of the evening:
9pm – A Tribute to HRH Duke of Edinburgh
10pm – BBC News at Ten
10.45pm – BBC Regional News
10.55pm – Weather
11pm – What the Papers Say
11.30pm – A Tribute to HRH Duke of Edinburgh (R)
12.25am – Weather for the Week Ahead
12.30am – BBC News

BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 5 are airing special programming to reflect the life of the Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip has been married to Queen Elizabeth II for 74 years and have four children, eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Announcing the Duke of Edinburgh’s death, a spokesperson of Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. Further announcements will be made in due course. The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
