Ben Shephard takes brutal dig at Piers Morgan after awards glory: ‘Had faith until then’

Wednesday evening saw the Television and Radio Industries Club (TRIC) Awards return, looking back at the last year of British TV and Radio. The celebrities all walked the red carpet dressed to kill, as the awards ceremony celebrated the best stars and shows on offer. Former GMB host Piers Morgan won the News Presenter award, with his former co-star Ben Shephard, who was also in attendance, taking a swipe at his win.

Ben was just one of the many celebrities on hand to present the awards on the evening, although he couldn’t resist a pop at his former GMB co-star when he took to the stage.

Ben took to the microphone to read aloud the nominations with the award in hand but quickly referred to Piers’ victory.

“I had such faith in TRIC,” the Tipping Point host began. “Until you voted Piers as your winner.”

Ben’s jibe received ripples of laughter from the crowd before he moved on to read aloud the nominations.

Piers, however, was asked about Ben by at the TRIC Awards and was full of praise for his former GMB colleague.

He said: “He’s a great guy. We spent five years working together and only ever spent two days in the studio together in five years.

“We never saw each other. We only ever saw each other at things like this because we never worked together.

“I was all for doing International Men’s Day and thought we should have presented together, but they never let me do it.

“It would have been him virtue signalling to all the feminists and me, aggravating him,” Ben explained.

The News Presenter category saw Piers Morgan compete against his former co-host Susanna Reid despite his memorable Good Morning Britain departure earlier this year.

Back in March, Piers walked off Good Morning Britain live on air when he refused to apologise for his comments about Meghan Markle.

Alongside Piers’ News Presenter win, Good Morning Britain also took home the award for Multi-Channel News.

Former co-presenter of Piers, Kate Garraway, was given the TRIC Special Award for her emotional journey following her husband Derek Draper’s battle with Covid.

Accepting her award, Kate cheekily remarked: “Because Emma (Gormley’s) my boss, am I actually fired? Because that was the most amazing goodbye message.”

The TV Presenter category saw fan-favourites Alison Hammond, Bradley Walsh and Ant and Dec all go against each other.

The duo ultimately took home the award after recently making history by winning the National Television Award for Best TV Presenter 20 years in a row.

The Entertainment Award nominations were Gogglebox, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and Bradley Walsh & Son: Breaking Dad, with Gogglebox walking away with the award.

I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!, The Masked Singer and Strictly Come Dancing were the nominations for the Reality TV Award, with I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! taking the win.

In the sports category, A League of Their Own was crowned as the winner, and The Crown walked away with the award for TV Drama.

Daytime TV show This Morning walked away with yet another award after being in the running alongside Steph’s Packed Lunch and The Chase.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
