Viewers were appalled by the £125,000 price tag on a new kitchen revealed at the start of Grand Designs’ 22nd season. Property expert Kevin McCloud returned to host the latest instalment of the Channel 4 programme, and recently confessed he shared the audience’s horror.

Kevin McCloud was stunned when South Devon couple Joe and Claire revealed they had spent a whopping £125,000 on a kitchen in their experimental new build.

The series kicked off its 22 instalment on the East Coast as Kevin checked in with an ambitious property constructed out of 34 shards of zinc.

In a recent interview with the Guardian, the Grand Designs host admitted he is often shocked by the final cost of the homes featured in the series.

“I am shocked by the cost of everything: petrol … the weekly shop,” he added.

However, even the rising prices of day-to-day life couldn’t prepare him for the lofty figures revealed by Joe and Claire in the new episode.

He explained: “My shock is just sort of an expression of moral indignation, really.”

He already appeared aghast by the £125,000 kitchen in the episode itself, and confirmed he agreed with fans’ sentiments on Twitter.

“I was brought up as a Methodist and I would never spend that money on a kitchen,” McCloud explained.

Although Grand Designs explores some of the UK’s most luxurious new homes, the host himself is far more restrained when it comes to his own cost of living.

He went on: “I just couldn’t do it, I can’t see the value.

“I can see the value of insulating the building, and of giving yourselves zero-carbon technologies, and reducing your bills and environmental impact. I can see the ethical value of that.

“But what I can’t see is the ethical… I can’t see the justification for gross spending on what are essentially basic requirements.”

The site was criticised by some fans as being especially extravagant considering the country’s ongoing housing crisis.

Once the new series began on September 1, several viewers flocked to Twitter to level their complaints.

A number of audience members singled out the cost of Joe and Claire’s kitchen as particularly egregious.

A user named Dariusz Ski wrote: “£125,000 for a kitchen. That’s f*****g obscene.”

Whilst Leah said: “£125,000 kitchen? WTF? That’s more than some people’s homes!”

To make matters worse, the luxurious new home ended up costing Joe and Claire £2.5 million after starting off with a budget of £835,000.

Even so, McCloud eventually softened on the project and appreciates the undeniable craftsmanship apparent in the final product.

Grand Designs season 22 continues Wednesdays on Channel 4.
