Captain America star Chris Evans has played Steve Rogers across both his own solo trilogy and in four Avengers movies to date. In fact, if you include cameos and end credits scenes, he’s been in 11 MCU outings to date. But now the actor has left the franchise in Avengers Endgame, the 39-year-old has shared which fellow Marvel superhero star he’d like to switch roles with if he could.

Speaking with ACE Universe, what else could Evans say but his franchise co-lead Robert Downey Jr?

The Captain America star said: “You know, I’ll say… I mean, I’ll say Downey, Iron Man …

“The paycheques would be nice, but just the role is so fun. The role is, you know, he’s the engine, he’s the life.

“But I suppose that’s kind of signing up for failure. I don’t think there’s anything anyone on this planet could do that would somehow improve upon what Downey’s done, you know what I mean?”

However, the Captain America star highlighted that, unlike other iconic roles, no one else can or should play Tony Stark other than Downey Jr himself.

Evans added: “I don’t consider that a role that’s gonna be like a James Bond or a Superman or Batman, that somehow other people get a bite at the apple. He’s Iron Man, the end.”

Both characters have bowed out of the MCU, but with time travel and the multiverse to explore in the franchise going forwards, a return certainly could be possible.

In fact, both stars have never given a definitive “no” to a comeback as their iconic Marvel leads.

Despite rumours of Evans’ return in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier being denied by Kevin Feige, the Captain America star says he would return to the franchise on one condition.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show last year, he said: “It’s not a hard no, but it’s not an eager yes either.

“I think Cap had such a tricky act to stick the landing, and I think they did a really nice job letting him complete his journey.

“If you’re going to revisit it, it can’t be a cash grab. It can’t be just because the audience wants to be excited.”

Evans added: “What are we revealing? What are we adding to the story? A lot of things would have to come together.”

Captain America’s fate is still ambiguous following the first episode of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

After all, he’s very old now, having gone back in time to live with Peggy – but that doesn’t mean he’s died.

While last month, Downey Jr admitted he was open to returning to the MCU as Iron Man.

Speaking with GQ, the Iron Man star said: “Well… I have alighted, for now. Real-world to save. But never say never.”

Tony may be dead and Steve could well be six feet under in the MCU soon, but if the Avengers need their fellow superheroes they can always borrow them from the past for a future battle.

Or, who knows, maybe we’ll see alternate versions of their characters show up in next year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Whatever the case, it feels inevitable that, at some point and in some form, both stars will return to the MCU in the future.
