The six remaining Strictly Come Dancing couples took to the dance floor again on Saturday night for Week 10 of the BBC dance contest. The competitors battled it out for a place in the quarter finals with a wide range of routines. However, things got a bit too much for one celebrity contestant and presenter Claudia Winkleman had to make an apology live on-air when she caused one star to burst into tears.
Rhys Stephenson and his Strictly dance partner Nancy Xu performed a Waltz on Saturday night.
They danced the emotional routine to Whitney Houston’s song You Light Up My Life.
As the performance came to an end, Rhys was overcome with emotions and broke down in tears while giving Nancy a hug.
He managed to compose himself while listening to the judges critiques, however, it wasn’t long before Rhys became tearful again.
Claudia chatted to the dancing duo following the performance and warned Rhys she was about to make him emotional again.
The presenter said: “I know you’re emotional, I don’t think this is going to help.
“From all of us, apologies. We’ve got a very special message for you,” she revealed.
Claudia then shared a video message from Rhys’ grandparents who live in the Cayman Islands.
In the video clip, Rhys’ grandmother said: “Hey Rhys this is grandma and grandad from the Cayman Islands.
“We watch you on Strictly Come Dancing all the time. You make us so proud.
“I love it, keep dancing. I watch it night and day, it puts me to bed and wakes me in the morning.
“Love you, god bless,” she concluded, with Rhys’ grandfather adding: “Rhys I love you.”
As the video message came to an end Rhys instantly broke down in tears once more.
Seeing how emotional the clip had made him, Claudia said: “I’m sorry, baby, I’m sorry.
“I know it means a lot. You haven’t seen them in so long, but they are watching you and they will be so proud of you tonight, they really will,” she commented.
The tears continued as Rhys received his marks from the Strictly judges and was awarded an overall score of 35 out of 40.
“Thank you, thank you so much!” Nancy yelled as the points came in.
Seeing how tearful the Strictly star had become, Claudia remarked: “Rhys, I know that’s making you worse.”
“Make it stop Claudia!” Rhys exclaimed, causing the presenter to burst out laughing.
“Listen, well done okay? You got a 10,” Claudia said, before suggesting she could cheer him up with a bad joke.
Fans of Rhys and Nancy will have to tune in on Sunday evening to find out if they make it through to the quarter finals.
Strictly Come Dancing continues Sunday at 7:20pm on BBC One.
