‘Coronation Street’ fans will get a chance to relive some of their favourite moments of the beloved ITV soap character Audrey Roberts, during a tribute show tonight (June 26). It will focus on the legacy of Sue Nicholls, who plays Weatherfield’s gossip-loving salon owner, during an impressive 40-year span on the show. During that time, the TV star has survived a serial killer’s murderous intent, a toyboy conman and much more. While her life off the small screen remained a little less controversial, unearthed accounts reveal a clash with husband Mark Eden after he regularly informed her about all of the other women he had kissed.
Sue Nicholls revealed that while her husband Mark was supportive of her on-screen romances, she often had to tell him to “shut up” when he advised her how to kiss other people – because it was all based on his own TV love life.
Highlights from the actress’ impressive career on the ITV soap will be broadcast on ‘Coronation Street Icons: Audrey Roberts – 40 Fabulous Years’ tonight.
The star spoke about Mark’s encouragement throughout her time in showbiz, even explaining that he was “rooting for” her character to get together with Ken Barlow, played by Bill Roache.
Sue told the Daily Record in 2015: “Mark thinks it’s good, he can see the potential.
“He also loves Bill, we’re friendly with him on a social level, so that’s nice. It pleases me that Mark thinks it’s right.”
At the time on ‘Corrie’, Audrey was lining up to smooch Ken and Sue admitted that Mark was giving her tips on how to kiss him.
She quipped: “He’s actually terribly helpful when it comes to those kinds of scenes. Mark’s probably kissed more women on screen than he’s had hot dinners.
“Very good he is at it too – although sadly I’ve never had a chance to kiss him on screen, only at home.
“In fact, he gives me so much advice at times I have to tell him to shut up.”
Mark, who starred in ‘Corrie’ too along with a list of other shows, also coached her through kissing Audrey’s toyboy turned conman Lewis, played by Nigel Havers.

She revealed that a number of admiring fans made proposals to date the star after they watched her character’s struggle to find love on-screen – after they had blurred reality and fiction.
Sue added: “I can’t say there were sackfuls – what a shame. But there were a couple when she was having a bad time with Lewis. That was nice to have.
“They weren’t vulgar, they were very sweet – men wanting to look after Audrey after her heartache.”
In real life, Sue and Mark married in 1993 but originally met at a friend’s barbecue – she maintained that her husband is an “old romantic”.
The star said: “We’re not sweetness and light all the time – that would be horrendous.

“But Mark is very romantic. He plays the piano, so we have a sing – possibly after a couple of glasses of wine.
“Mark serenades me with Frank Sinatra, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, all those romantic numbers.
“And he’s sticking around – even though I’m bossy. We’re soulmates. I hope he thinks the same.”
‘Coronation Street Icons: Audrey Roberts – 40 Fabulous Years’ will be broadcast at 8PM tonight (June 26) on ITV1.
