The Masked Singer returns to ITV on New Year’s Day for a third series as a brand new group of celebrities attempt to conceal their identities while performing. Once again, viewers will not find out which stars have taken part in the show until they are unmasked but judge Jonathan Ross has teased the famous face behind one particular character.

Joel Dommett returns to host the show while Jonathan, Davina McCall, Rita Ora and Mo Gillian resume their roles as judges.

In the last series, viewers were shocked as Joss Stone, Ne-Yo, Lenny Henry and Martine McCutcheon were unmasked among others.

Ahead of the new series, chat show host stalwart Jonathan opened up on who surprised him the most from the previous batch of celebrities.

He said: “Morten Harket surprised me. He sang brilliantly and I didn’t get him and I’m a big fan of A-Ha.”

“I know him off-camera a little bit and I know he’s quite a serious guy, so I kind of didn’t expect to see him on the show,” he continued.

“Even though I momentarily toyed with the idea of it being him, I thought no he absolutely wouldn’t do this.

“But you never know who it’s going to be. There’s a couple of real surprises.”

The ITV star teased fans on what they can expect from the new group of celebrities.

He noted: “One person who disguised their voice so much, because their voice is normally so distinctive, that we didn’t get it.

“And there’s another person who is, shall we say, I think probably the oldest person we’ve had on the show so far and I managed to guess that person correctly.

“But that’s because I’m the oldest person on the panel. So, it’s bittersweet frankly.”

Although fans are desperate to find out which stars are hiding behind the masks, Jonathan revealed he’s rarely stopped by anyone demanding answers.

“Normally, they’ll say and I don’t know if they think I’m going to blurt stuff out, ‘’Don’t tell me because I want to play along!’” Jonathan explained.

“People enjoy playing along so much. Sometimes little kids want to know who it is, but what they want to do is tell you their guess and have you tell them if it’s right or wrong.

“All I say to that is, ‘Oh, you really think it’s them? Interesting.’

“I say interesting in a way that can mean you’re right or that you’re wrong.”

The chat show host admitted if he could have been hiding in any of the costumes it would have been Lenny Henry’s Blob.

“That looked like there was space inside and you could probably put a stool inside as well so you could sit down while you were singing,” he said.

“I’d rather go into one of the bigger costumes so you can have a little chair.”

The Masked Singer begins on ITV on New Year’s Day at 7pm.
