EastEnders fans demand iconic character is axed after string of 'dreary and depressing' storylines | The Sun

EASTENDERS fans are calling for one long-serving Albert Square character to be axed, after his 'dreary' and 'depressing' storylines.

BBC viewers demand the iconic character Ben Mitchell – played by Max Bowden – to leave the soap after growing 'bored' of his ‘depressing storylines.

Ben has been a main character on the BBC soap since 1996, and viewers have seen him evolve from a child to a murder to a gangster to a father.

However, his recent storylines have seen the character broken and depressed as he experiences tragedy after tragedy.

In recent years, Ben lost his hearing after a boat accident and then he was a victim of male rape.

At the same time, the mother of his daughter and friend Lola Pearce-Brown lost her battle with cancer, and he is now suffering with an eating disorder.

Emmerdale star quits soap after 12 years as actor teases ‘sad ending’

This comes after EastEnders viewers praised actor Max Bowden's performance amid his character's bulimia storyline.

Ben was honest to his husband Callum Highway (Tony Clay) about his rape trauma and eating disorder.

Callum was left stunned when Ben admitted: “I haven’t been eating. I’m avoiding food… food is the only thing I’ve had a choice over… I do want to stop, I’m just not sure if I can.”

Fans were relieved and moved by Ben as he finally accepted help.

One tweeted:  “YES Ben, so totally proud of him for finally admitting he has a problem. First steps & all that right?”

Another added: Ben explaining how his ED [eating disorder] works in his mind and Callum listening with that little tear track because Ben’s pain is so painful for him too.. Don’t touch me."

A third commented: Get yourself a partner like Callum. Who builds you back up when you fall down, even when you try and push them away.

"Who loves you despite everything you hate about yourself. Who sees your pain even when you try and hide it and doesn't let you go."

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
