Emmerdale’s Laurel and Jai split fears as they make heartbreaking baby decision

Laurel Thomas and Jai Sharma could be set to split as the stress of her difficult pregnancy affects their relationship.

Emmerdale stars Charlotte Bellamy and Chris Bisson have discussed how their decision to terminate Laurel's pregnancy will have lasting effects on their life as a couple.

In coming episodes, the couple will learn that their baby is developing with Down's syndrome, after Laurel learned she was pregnant in Thursday night's double-bill.

Viewers already know they will choose to terminate the pregnancy, as the hard-hitting storyline was previously announced by show bosses.

And speaking to Daily Star, Charlotte and Chris have warned fans that it could bring an end to their relationship.

Former Shameless star Chris laughed: "Anything can break anyone up on Emmerdale!"

Charlotte told us: "I think the stress of making a decision like this as a couple, it puts an enormous amount of pressure on a relationship, doesn't it?

"Of course they're both addicts as well. This would be a bumpy journey for them, I think."

Laurel has struggled with alcohol addiction in the past, while Jai was addicted to cocaine.

Chris said: "Of course, it's a difficult journey and the episodes are only the very start of this journey for these characters.

"There will be ramifications which run on for quite some time."

There has already been backlash from fans who aren't happy that they choose to end the pregnancy.

The soap has covered a similar plot before, however Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry) had her baby and her son Leo, who has Down's syndrome, is still in the show now.

Laurel is set to confide in Rhona when trying to make up her mind, and it's clearly not going to be an easy decision.

Charlotte explained: "This show takes you on a journey, and you see the thought process.

"She's feeling guilt, she's feeling shame of what to do, should she do this or that?

"This is what real people go through and it's so well written."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm, with an extra episode at 8pm on Thursdays, on ITV
