First look at EastEnders' horror blaze as Walford favourites left fighting for their lives

THE EastEnders cast has filmed a dramatic explosion scene that leaves smoke billowing around Walford.

Enemies Gray Atkins and Kheerat Panesar team up to tackle the blaze in scenes that will air September 13 as four show favourites fight for their lives.

Photos reveal plumes of smoke choking the air in scenes that mark Janine Butcher's return to the BBC One soap.

The villain – played by actress Charlie Brooks – becomes trapped in the raging fire after hunting down her estranged daughter Scarlett.

Janine eventually finds Tommy Moon and Scarlett hiding upstairs at Phil Mitchell’s place.

A scuffle ensues and they don’t notice Scarlett’s jumper landing on the lit hob from Phil’s cooking.

Speaking to The Sun, actress Charlie teased the dramatic scenes and said: “As we know, we’ve got Scarlett, who may find herself back in the square so Janine is heading back that way.

"We know that it’s going to be explosive, we might see some flames and a big fire.

"And I think some of the relationships, some of the old characters that we see her working with, for me I know when it’s exciting because I can feel it as an actress.

A lot to look forward to…

"I can feel it when two characters are sparking off each other, I’m like ‘This feels so good and so exciting’ so you’ve got a lot of that to look forward to.

"It’s fun and that’s what I’m excited about exploring with her. As well as all of the layered stuff that’s going on with her."

The BBC One soap’s cast and crew were spotted filming a huge fire on set last month.

And it coincides with Executive Producer Jon Sen hinting a murderous Gray Atkins' won't be free to kill for much longer.

He said: "We have obviously got the culmination of, or the building to the culmination of, the Gray storyline. That takes it to a kind of next chapter.

"Obviously that has been a very long story arc and it has taken many twists and turns. But we are going back to the grass roots of the story really, and taking it back to its origins with a fascinating turn of events for the Atkins family."

Will he die in the blaze trying rescue either Phil, Janine, Scarlett or Tommy?

While BBC bosses kept tight-lipped about the storyline details, a source recently said: "The explosion is really the start of a massive autumn for the show that will take them through the rest of the year."
