Christmas creeps ever closer and the arrival of the new John Lewis Christmas advert for 2021 is sure to make fans very happy with a sweet story of friendship between an alien space traveller and a young boy.

Called 'Unexpected Guest', there is of course beautiful new cover version for viewers to enjoy too for the soundtrack, this year sung by Lola Young.

It's a highlight for many fans who wait eagerly to find out the theme each year, and after a lonely Christmas for a lot of people in 2020 this cute tale of friendship will be very welcome.

The new ad follows a 14-year old boy called Nathan and a space traveller called Skye, also 14.

Nathan is on his way home from school when he sees a flashing light.

The light is found in the woods near his home, and it's Skye in her spaceship from another world.

Nathan discovers and befriends Skye, and their unlikely friendship grows as Nathan shows Skye all that the festive season has to offer.

He teaches her some of his family's festive traditions, including decorating a tree with fairy lights, celebrating Christmas through eating and hosting friends together.

Nathan introduces her to the joy of mince pies, and giving gifts that you know someone will love, when he thoughtfully gives her his Christmas jumper.

John Lewis says the new advert allows us to "see the magic of Christmas through the eyes of someone who has never experienced it before."

Providing the soundtrack to the advert is a big deal for an artist, and previous musicians include Bastille, Ellie Goulding, Gabrielle Aplin, Lily Allen, Aurora, Tom Odell and Vaults.

In 2018, Elton John became the first artist to soundtrack and also star in the advert.

This year's choice, Lola Young, is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter from South London.

She performed a cover of 1984 hit track ‘Together in Electric Dreams’, originally released by Philip Oakey and Giorgio Moroder.

Lola has been described as "a brilliant up and coming British talent, she was chosen for her rich and unique sound which brings to life the magic of the advert and the friendship that develops on screen."

Sadly though, their friendship can't last as Skye eventually fixes her ship, and must return home.

It's a bittersweet but heartwarming goodbye when Nathan gives her the Christmas jumper he was wearing when they first met.

As Skye disappears into the night, she leaves a shining star on a Christmas tree in the distance to remind Nathan of her by.

Claire Pointon, Director of Customer said: “There is nothing more magical than discovering the joy of Christmas for the first time and enjoying your favourite festive moments with loved ones.

"After the last 18 months, we wanted our advert to really celebrate this as we look forward to a brighter future."

"We know our customers are excited for this festive season more than ever, as they reconnect with family and friends.

She continued: "Through the story of Skye and Nathan we celebrate friendship and are reminded of the joy of experiencing Christmas for the first time.”

Fans will also be able to buy their own version of Nathan’s Christmas jumper, and 10% of the profits for each jumper sold will be donated equally to the FareShare and Home-Start UK charities.
