Gemma Atkinson admits ‘resenting’ fiance Gorka Marquez over work after baby
Gemma Atkinson has admitted she and fiance Gorka Marquez held ‘a little resentment’ towards each other when he returned to work after she gave birth.
The couple, who met on Strictly Come Dancing in 2017, welcomed their daughter Mia Louise in July 2019 before getting engaged on Valentine’s Day 2021.
However, the pair initially struggled to find the balance in their relationship and family life once Gorka returned to work on Strictly not long after Gemma gave birth.
The Hollyoaks actress has explained how it took a toll on her but also her partner, who regretted missing quality family time while away filming.
Speaking to Christine Lampard on ITV’s Lorraine, Gemma said: ‘He had to go on tour when she was three days old and again, he got grief for it, “who chooses work over their child?” but he had a contract and it wasn’t just his show, it was production that he’d be letting down.
‘He has to keep his social going for the show, get tickets sold, so I was looking at all the stuff about him and Giovanni [Pernice], Aljaž [Škorjanec] together and I was sat at home with my stitches, the nurse coming round to change my dressing, Mia crying, and I was just like oh my gosh this is my life now and nothing’s changed for him.
‘I remember speaking to my mum about it and she was saying typically the guys go back to work, things change, people are in different situations and some are parenting alone. It’s just your situation to deal with.’
The TV star also recalled the heartbreaking moment Gorka admitted his struggles with being separated from her and Mia, with his Strictly co-star Giovanni Pernice stepping in.
She explained: ‘Gio text me and said “Gorka’s not himself, just letting you know”. I Facetimed him and they were out one night all the lads, and he was in the hotel on his own. He just got really upset, he said I don’t want to be here, I want to be home with you and our baby. Then it just dawned on me that it’s just as tough fro the partner that goes back to work than the partner who’s at home.
‘You kind of resent each other’s situations a little bit.’
Gemma is releasing a new book, The Toddler Club, in which she details the pressure she faced about her body after giving birth to her first child in the height of summer, as well as the scrutiny that young mums face.
In a recent interview with Hello! Magazine, the soap star said she and Gorka make the effort to spend time together and detailed her ideal date night, which consists of getting a takeaway and staying in or a brunch.
‘I loved going out when I was younger but now nights like that are few and far between, even though they’re always amazingly fun,’ she said. ‘But it’s just nicer, I think, when you’ve been at work all week to just be at home in your pyjamas on a Saturday night watching a film and having a takeaway.’
Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
