'Grey's Anatomy' Will Be Back in September – Here's What We Know So Far

It’s official! Grey’s Anatomy is returning to ABC for season 16 on September 26. The season finale in May left a lot of questions hanging in the air that fans are hoping get answered… fast. What should viewers expect to see this upcoming year at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital?

The show’s anchor

Ellen Pompeo, who plays the show’s focal character Dr. Meredith Grey, will be back for season 16, though she recently spoke about wanting to embark on some new projects. “I’m really excited to do some new things, it’s about time that I mix it up and I’m really excited about my producing career, and I’m definitely looking for a change,” she told Entertainment Weekly in September.

Still, since making a $20 million deal with ABC and having a show with ratings that never falter, Pompeo is happy to stay put for awhile. “I keep saying, ‘I’m ready to move on and I want to stop the show before the ratings go down,’ but the ratings never go down!” she told TVLine. “They go down a little bit, but the fact that we are able to hold our title as [ABC’s number one series] is kind of [incredible]. It’s very cool to have these kind of ratings and be on a hit network show in this [Peak TV] landscape.”

And it looks like Dr. Meredith Grey will bemaking the rounds on Grey’s Anatomy at least through 2021, since according to the HollywoodReporter, Pompeo closed a new deal with the network through season 17.

“I don’t think about it with an ending,” she told Entertainment Tonight in 2017. “There is no ending in mind anymore. I used to have all these endings planned, but we passed one of them in season three and one of them in season five and one of them in season eight, so I’ve given up.”

Show creator Shonda Rhimes told E! News that she’s following Pompeo’s lead. “Ellen and I have a pact that I’m going to do the show as long as she’s going to do the show. So the show will exist as long as both of us want to do it,” Rhimes said. “If she wants to stop, we’re stopping. So I don’t know if we’ll see 600 [episodes], but I want to keep it feeling fresh. As long as there are fresh stories to tell and as long as we’re both excited about the stories being told, we’re in. So we’ll see where that takes us.”

Familiar faces

Along with Pompeo, some recurring characters from last seasonhave been signed on as season regulars. Chris Carmack, Jake Borelli, and GregGermann, who play Dr. Atticus Lincoln (a.k.a. Link), intern Levi“Glasses“ Schmitt, and Dr. Thomas Koracick, respectively, will bereturning for season 16 as cast members, accordingto Deadline.

“Chris, Jake, and Greg have been recurring for us as guest stars and have popped as fan favorites,” showrunner Krista Vernoff told Deadline. “We are excited to continue revealing their characters and we are beyond thrilled to welcome them to the Grey’s Anatomy family.”

Couples cliffhangers

There were a few relationships left hanging in the balance at the end of the season 15 finale. Teddy, played by Kim Raver, was giving birth to Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) baby, while Owen was finally proclaiming his love for her. But of course, there’s also Teddy’s boyfriend Tom to consider, who dated Teddy throughout her pregnancy. Who will she end up with?

Even Raver doesn’t know how season 16 would start with the love triangle. “I think Owen has done a lot of work on himself,” she commented to People on the cliffhanger. “I think they’re in a really great place for this to be an amazing, amazing relationship. Of course, they did have poor Tom there doing the baby crib and eating a sandwich. I was like, ‘Really?’”

Another fan favorite couple is Jo and Alex, whofell on troubled times due to Jo’s depression, where at the end of last seasonshe checked herself into Grey Sloan for treatment.

Vernoff seems to be leaning toward optimism forthe couple when next season begins. “I hope therapy brings her back to herselfand Alex,” Vernoff told TVLine. “He getsto heal that wound that keeps repeating, where he chooses women who go intomental-health crises. I’d like to see that story complete for him, with Joreturning to him in a way that’s beautiful.”
