If You're Dying To Know Whether 'The Duchess' Is Getting a Second Season, You're Not Alone
If you’re laughing your arse off courtesy of The Duchess on Netflix, you may be clamoring for more of the chaotic sitcom created by and starring stand-up comedian Katherine Ryan. She plays an independent, often rude, and fiercely feminine single mother seeking a sperm donor so her daughter can have a sibling. Ryan herself is Canadian, but the series is set in London, and therefore feels like bawdy British millennial Gilmore Girls, IMHO. While there hasn’t been any official word from the Powers That Be at Netflix about a second season, here’s everything we know.
Is The Duchess season 2 even happening in the first place?
We don’t know! There’s a pretty decent chance it will. Typically, I don’t get nervous about Netflix shows getting the axe until it already has two or three seasons under its belt. Other Netflix originals set in the United Kingdom like Sex Education, Derry Girls, and The End Of The F*cking World all got at least a second season pick-up, so why wouldn’t this one? Unless Ryan has other comedy plans, I’d say it’s a safe bet that we’ll see more from this modern family.
Netflix, to borrow a Mean Girls reference and much like Ryan’s character in the show, is not like a Regular TV Network. They’re a Cool TV Network that shuns tradition. They could announce The Duchess season 2 on Netflix tomorrow, or it could take months for them to make up their mind.
Okay, fair, but what would it be about??
The show is based on Ryan’s own single life and relationship with her daughter, so one can only imagine that the stories are endless. The first season is all about her character’s pursuit of a second child. Seems only natural that the second season would focus on that second child and (no spoilers!!) all the twists and complications that lead to said second child entering the world.
How do you expect me to cope with all this uncertainty?!
I know the world can feel chaotic and random sometimes (like, IDK, throughout all of 2020). But luckily, there are multiple Ryan stand-up specials (Glitter Room and In Trouble) on Netflix to help pass the time while we await more information about The Duchess. She’s also one of the featured comedians on the panel show The Fix, which is on Netflix as well. There’s really no shortage of Ryan content out there, and soon enough we’ll know for sure if The Duchess Season 2 will be joining the party.
